Zone Alarm System Checkup
« on: Monday 14 January 08 16:44 GMT (UK) »

I have just updated my Zone Alarm and was offered a free system checkup so of course I took it.

It said it would take 2 to 3 minutes, it took nearer 15!

Result my system status is poor  Shocked Shocked  Just about everything failed, despite having AVG, Zone Alarm, Spybot Search and Destroy.

Failed:
Active Spyware Infections - have just run Spybot and there were some to deal with
System Security Settings
Security Zone Settings
Internet/System Performance
System Clutter
Windows Startup
Hard Drive health
Registry Problems

It doesn't give me any solutions except to pay out to buy their new software!

Does anyone have any ideas what these could be, whether any are fatal and what I should do.

Thanks, I kind of got the feeling though that the system checkup was unlikely to come up as good because then they couldn't sell me anything  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

You're right, they want you to buy it that's why they give you a free checkup. If you have antivirus/firewall protection + SpyBot & posslbly Adaware (or similar) you dont need anything else, just defrag regularly & you should run OK.

Thanks Jim

That's what I thought.

I will go and get adaware, I used to have a MS one but apparently they don't do it anymore!

Obviously they will want you to buy their product, so can you rely on them telling the truth?

The most serious thing they said was "Hard Drive health".

If that is true then you could be in trouble.

My advice is to get some immediate confirmation of this from an independent source to verify ZoneAlarm's prognosis.

The first thing to check is Event Viewer.  Double click Administrative Tools in Control Panel and select Event Viewer.  Check the System section first for any errors.  What you are looking for are Read/Write Errors or anything associated with read/write errors.

There are other utilities that can check your hard drive's health.  Usually your hard disk vendor will provide some utility program available for download from the Internet.  I know Seagate have such a program.

Hi downside

I have to say that was the one that alarmed me the most!

The details say:
Hard Drive Health
Definition
With use, hard drives can begin to suffer from a variety of problems that, if not repaired, may ultimately cause error messages, file corruption. loss of data, sudden program crashes, shutdowns, or restarts and even complete system failure.

Problem
Hard drive problems have detected that can cause data loss, peformance bottlenecks and overall loss of system speed.

I checked the Event viewer and no read/write errors.

You could try this programme which someone on here recommended a while ago

Advanced WindowsCare Personal 2 from Iobit.

It's free and I find it very good.

I don't include the privacy sweep though when I run it as it removes all my passwords.

I agree, the only thing I would worry about is hard Drive Health.
Doesn't necessarily mean anything, but it's worth checking on it if you can, or definitely make sure you have good backups.

If you haven't got good backups of your whole system, or any way of doing that, it's worth looking at an external USB drive.  Very reasonably priced these days (especially in the USA).  You can backup your whole hard drive, or even just the data.   Nothing worse than losing everything...

It helps to have someone handy who can fix/upgrade your system, hopefully someone can help there if you need...

Fingers crossed your system is ok...

Tony

A good move and one I took last year, everything backed up on external drive.  Whatever would I do if I lost my family tree for instance  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I quite agree - plus all my emails, contact details, address and telephone books, financial information - pretty much my whole life is on a hard drive (or multiples).
You don't quite realise how much until you lose data...
Very sensible to have it all backed up.

Hi Kerry,

The same company, Iobit do a defrag programme which is a lot quicker than using the windows one.

I am not sure defrag is the problem here, the original topic was about disk health, which is not the same thing.

If you are concerned about hard disk failure (and who isn't?) then there is a utility that you can download and install that will notify you if your hard disk is about to fail called Active S.M.A.R.T.:-

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Active_SMART_d246.html

I like the way they add at the end that:-

Quote
No special technical knowledge is required to use Active SMART.

Phew - that's a releif. Smiley

I was just mentioning to Kerry about Iobit having the defrag programme as she had downloaded the other one,I wasn't meaning that would cure the problem, sorry if it seemed that way.
