Can this be correct ??
« on: Wednesday 05 January 05 08:55 GMT (UK) »

I have found in the Parish records for Selling an entry for Banns -
1770 Oct 14 GODDEN John otp wid & Ann BAINES of Sheldwich

Then in the PR's for Sheldwich is a marriage entry
1770 Oct 30 GODDEN John, Selling & BAYNES Ann otp banns

Obviously the same couple  Wink but can banns be read in one Parish and the marriage take place in another ? I did not think this was possible, unless something happened to the Church in Sellingm around that time.
And why did no one make any note in the PR's of Selling that the marriage took place elsewhere, which would have saved me a lot of frustration  Angry

Thanks
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

I had an idea that Banns could be read in the two parishes of the bride and groom (if they were from different parishes) but that then the wedding would take place in one of those parishes.  But then there might be some note of Banns in the sheldwich PR's....

Regards,

Emily

Hi Adrian

Yes, Emily is correct.  If the couple were of 2 different parishes and the marriage was to take place by banns then the banns would need to be called on 3 consecutive weeks in each parish.  It is still the same today.

Your clue was in the banns at Selling - Ann was of Sheldwich so the marriage would have taken place at Selling or Sheldwich.  Sheldwich would have been favourable because marriages traditionally took place in the bride's parish.

You should also find the banns in the banns register of Sheldwich but I guess that is irrelevant now that you have located the marriage.  Thus, if you can't find a marriage in the parish that you think it should have taken place, it is always a good idea to search the banns register to see if the marriage took place elsewhere.

This ruling applies from 1754.

Clearer now?

Emily / Shelley

Thank you.

I think I was lucky in having the brides names and here place of birth, otherwise it could have been a real nightmare trying to find the marriage if I only had the banns for the grooms parish.
