Hi Bryant
Drawn a blank here I'm afraid. I assume he was the William Ray who was married in the June quarter of 1877 in Brentford, volume 3a page 70. (Matching ref: Martha Maria Newman) The marriage certificate should of course identify his father.

Hello Dave and thankyou for looking
I drew the same blank!
Their is something funny going on?........you would have noticed that his wife in the marriage was Martha Maria Lee Newman and many of William & Martha's children had the name Lee before the Ray which suggests to me it is from her side of the family and lo & behold..........her parents with a Lee in 1841 which suggests that Thomas may have been married before (10 year old son?) and the 10 year old Sophia Lee is Eliza's (aged 20-24) sister?..........consequently Eliza wanted the name Lee in their children's names to denote who the mother was!
1841 Plough Yard, New Brentford, Middx Thomas Newman 30 stone sawyer Y Eliza " 20 Y Charles " 10 y / Sophia Lee 10 Y --------------
However that hasn't anything to do with William and where he is in 1861 unless something similiar has happened ie a male Ray from Stanmore married and a son named William was born but the father died 1855-1860 and the mother remarried and she and William took the new name until William left home and he reverted to source...........hang on, a pig just flew by
Are the Ray's in Stanmore (Great or Little) in 1851 (I don't have access to the 1851)
Certs.........this is the wife's lot and I have a few certs somewhere (I lost all the genealogy just over a year ago when the Pc decided without consultation to stop taking the tablets and died on me!) but I will purchase the cert if I have to, god knows iv'e been keeping her for 37 years whats another £7-00
Regards Bryant
