Jackie,

This is what I can find in the area for SIMPSONS:

Baptised:
22 Aug 1819 John SIMPSON, son of Robert & Mary
13 Aug 1825 Thomas SIMPSON son of George & Thamer

Marriages:
9 May 1726 John SIMPSON to Jane Whitfield
22 May 1753 Thomas SIMPSON to Sarah ROBINSON
16 May 1758 Christopher Walton to Sarah SIMPSON
3 Jul 1762 Jona Kidd to Mary SIMPSON
11 Jan 1770 Matthew Proud to Elizabeth SIMPSON
14 Dec 1773 Joseph Walton to Ann SIMPSON
30 Apr 1775 John Lowden to Ann SIMPSON
25 Oct 1778 John Williamson to Margaret SIMPSON
14 Nov 1822 Thomas SIMPSON to Elizabeth Kidd
7 Dec 1822 Jonathan SIMPSON to Ann Percival
31 Oct 1824 Foster Haldon to Elizabeth SIMPSON
7 Feb 1826 Thomas SIMPSON to Jane Hardy

Gravestone inscription:
William SIMPSON of Alston, died 1 April 1844 aged 13.

Sorry no 20th Century stuff. I don't know where burials would have taken place in 1940, there is an old SIMPSON grave at the nearby Kirkhaugh Church.

I would recommend that you look at the North Pennine Ancestors site http://www.northpennineancestors.co.uk/Index.htm it is used by a lot of knowledgable  people.

Regards.

Hi Jacky

There's a separate cemetery at the south end of the town, some way from the church.  I would imagine the later burials were there.

Link to aerial photo of the cemetery http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=54.808419&lon=-2.441665&z=19.5&r=0&src=ggl

(zoom out to see its position relative to the town - the church is close to the town centre)

I would be interested in the Vipond connection in your first post, Vipond is a name that crops up in my SILs family and whilst it is no real interest to me I am sure his step mother who is researching that line would be gratefull of any information.

Alan. If the vipond's moved into Co Durham I have another 3 gravestones that may be of interest. 2 from Stanhope and one from Stanley, Crook.

3 Jul 1762 Jona Kidd to Mary SIMPSON
14 Nov 1822 Thomas SIMPSON to Elizabeth Kidd
Sorry no 20th Century stuff. terry

Terry, thank you very much for this.  I think the Kidds will be mine - ironically, through marriage to my Watsons (of Renwick) not to the Simpsons.  Unfortunately, I don't know if I've got earlier Simpsons in Alston.  My g-grandfather moved there from Renwick where he'd married Margaret Watson but I believe he's from Morland originally.  The question is whether it's his Simpson family who moved out to Renwick and Alston before him or if he's completely unrelated.
Back to the drawing board...  Undecided

Hi Geoff,  that map is astonishing!  I think that's the cemetary that I went to last year - unfortunately, I didn't know Isaac's d.o.death then or that he wasn't originally from Alston so only looked at the earlier headstones.  I'll be back later in the year and will find him then.

I'm interested in the Milburns in Alston.  Especially any John Milburn born around 1780's. I would be interested in any burials in order to rule out some threads I've been researching.
