Hi Adam,

I just stumbled on your message a year later.  I would be interested in the inscription on the Borrow headstones.

Thank you,
Aja

Hello Aja. Here is the inscription for the single Borrow gravestone:-

In memory of Thomas Borrow of Hartley Burn, who died November/8/1841? aged 59 years.
Also Mary his wife, who died at Monkland in Ayrshire April/9/1844 aged 54 years.
Also Betsy, Mary, Jane, Isabella, George, Thomas and John, sons and daughters of the above who died at Jarrow.
Also John his brother, who died at Alston August/3/1846 aged 67 years.
Also Ann, wife of John Borrow, who died August/5/1853 aged 62 years.

This is the only graveyard that I have done in Cumberland most of my work is from Weardale in Co Durham.

I noticed that there is one 1790 ish Borrow gravestone in West Auckland , Co Durham
(Thought I would mention it in case it may be of interest.)

Thanks Adam.  That is the Borrow family I was looking for.  The inscription has filled in a few blanks for me.  Thanks again!

By the way, Adam, I would be interested in the Borrow stone from West Auckland as well.    Thanks again.

Hello Aja. Yes you can have the inscription but you need to put your request on the Durham board.
I do not want to confuse anybody by putting Co Durham inscriptions on the Cumberland board.
I think the last posting for West Auckland was 27th December so it is easy to find.
There is another gravestone for Lanchester. Again if you want that one use the Lanchester link

Hello Mary. The Walton inscriptions have already been posted (see posting number 10)
Here is a vipond inscription for Alston:-
To the memory of John Vipond, who died July/5/1758 aged 82 years.
followed by a long verse.

There are 6 Vipond gravestones for Garrigill.

I first posted the surname list on March/8/08. So if you go to that posting and put your request on the Garrigill thread I will post them

There are also 2 Harrison gravestones but they are not as early as your request.

The Garrigill grave condition are not very good because they are all affected by the dreaded lichen.

Hi Adam
Just found your post re Alston.
My relative John Wilson married Mary Walton in Alston 1785. I am descended from the eldest son Joseph.
I am interested in the Wilson inscriptions.

Thanks

Hello David. Here is the one inscription that I have:-

I memory of Jacob Wilson of Alston House, born July 10th 1770, died July 7th 1858.
Elizabeth, wife of the above, born ?? 25th 1776, died December 23rd 1857.
Frances, the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Wilson of Alston House, who departed this life on the 6th day of November 1810 aged 15 months.
Also Hannah their daughter, who departed this life 23rd day of May 1822.
The bottom part where the date and possibly the age has been damaged by weather and time.

 Smiley
Thanks Adam
I'll have to do some homework on that family.
They seem to have moved to Cumrew later, my ggrandfather was born there in 1825.
Hope to visit the area sometime soon.
I'm in Australia.

My earliest known WHITE ancestor is Samuel WHITE who married Mary VIPOND on October 20, 1699 in Garrigill.  I have no other info on either of them.  Any help, from gravestones or other sources would be very, very, welcome.  Would be delighted to exchange data.  Cheers,   Ian.
