Hi. I ventured out of Co Durham and collected what gravestone inscriptions that I could from St Augustines, parish church of Alston. Although the graveyard is kept in very good condition the gravestones are in a very poor condition. I think it must be a combination of the poor quality stone and the exposure to harsh weather conditions. Here are the surnames that were readable. Milburn,Craig,Gill?,Wilson,Fair,Carrick/Garrick?,Walton,Bell,Little, Stagg,Walton,Cooper,Hodgson,Smith,Snowdon,Ridley,Vipond,Westmoreland, Borrow,Laws,Bullickk,Hewitson,Harrison,Friend,Dickenson,Rowle.

Hello Jay. Here it is.:-Here lies the body of Gilbert Walton of Gallagill who departed this life ye 9 day of March 1732 aged 46 years. Mat: son of Tho Bell of Gal: died 17th of Decb 1746. age 10 years. I have typed it as it was shown on the stone other than the name Bell. That was Bel with the other L being above the name. It looks like the mason misspelt the Bell name and had to add the L later and that was the only place he had to put it.

Hello, Do you have any Simpsons, Watsons or Renwicks please? I'd be interested in Bell too, if possible. Best wishes, Jackie

Hello Jackie. I do not have any for Simpson,Watson or Renwick. Maybe Terry will have a look to see what he has got? There is another stone for Jay that may be of use:- To the memory of Mary, sister of William Walton of Raise who died at Skelgill Oct the 25th 1751 aged 23. Also Ann, the daughter of William Walton who died at Raise Sep the 23rd (looks like 1795) after that the stone is unreadable.

Thanks for that, both of you. I think some of them should fit eventually - just not sure at the moment. Best wishes, Jackie

Terry, Do you have any 20th C information? My great-grandfather Isaac Simpson, died in 1940 at Whitewell, Alston. Any idea where he's likely to be buried? Best wishes, Jackie
