divorce in the early 1900s
« on: Monday 14 January 08 20:45 GMT (UK) »

hi i was wondering if anyone can tell me where to go to find any surviving divorce papers?
my gtgt grandfather john henry warrener was born in radford in 1865 and married a rebecca twigger in 1887.by the 1901 census two of the three children they had together are living with johns parents george and sarah warrener, the other daughter ada is living with her father john as boarders. And i couldnt find rebecca anywhere no death etc...until i found an entry for rebecca twigger living as a housekeeper, though she does say she is married she also has a daughter with her born 1897 called florence twigger.the gentleman she is housekeeper to is a mr dunn a widower, this couple had children together, and eventually married in 1924 but the marriage was between the mr dunn and rebecca warrener which would legally have been her name after her marriage to john,as john didnt die until 1938 they would have had to have divorced.
my gt aunt says she does remember her dad mentioning he had half brothers and sisters and visited them regulaly.
so where would i find any papers regarding the divorce to prove they are the same rebecca?

many thanks patsy

John Henry Warrener filed for divorce against his wife Rebecca in 1922, naming Walter Dunn as co-respondent.

The file is in The National Archives, you can find it in the online Catalogue

Divorce files are original documents, so you will need to go to Kew to see it, or else have it copied for you. The case might also have been reported in the local newspaper where they lived.

Best of luck

Patsy

Glad I could help. The names have only been put in the catalogue in the last few weeks, so not long ago it would have been a much more long-winded process to get the information. As it was, I barely had to move a muscle!

Cheers

PS Take care of the brood, and one day they might take care of you (or at least move out and stop asking to borrow money, which is progress in the right direction)
