Looking for information on the following family. Have found information from the IGI further to my previous posts. would like to find out who the girls married and when which members of the family migrated to Australia. Parents:From sons' Australian death certificate. James ROSS, Merchant, TAIN, Aberdeenshire/Ross-Cromarty (My geography may be a bit off, apologies if this is so) Ann Thompson ROSS From IGI: Entries Ross-Cromarty
Alexander ROSS 3/2/1805, Christening 8/2/1805
Hellen ROSS 1/4/1806
Ann Maria ROSS, 1/6/1810, Christening 8/6/1810
Maria ROSS, 8/11/1813
Willina ROSS, 9/9/1815, Christening 20/9/1815
The time frame seems a bit gappy so I suspect that there may have been some more children.
Thanking you, Leanne

Hi Leanne
Tain is in Ross & Cromarty. I'll see if I can get this moved to that board.

No need to apologies at all
I've got three possible marriages for Helen in Tain:
9 Feb 1821 to David Ross 23 Dec 1825 to George Corbett 30 Dec 1825 to <unknown> Graham
Have you tried Scotlands People yet:
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
It's pay to view but very cheap. reasonable

I'm trying to eliminate them.
Helen Corbett (marriage 1825) was born 1798, Tain on the 1851 census, so she's out if your bpt. of 1806 is correct.
I can't see any other Hel(l)ens b. Tain circa 1806 so far on the 1851. I'll try El(l)ens.

I think I have the remains of the family on the 1841 census:
Esther Row, Tain
District 82 Ed 2 Page 7
James Ross, 55-59, Farmer (?)* Ann, 50-54 Eliza, 25-29 Williamina, 26 Bell Dingwall, 20-24, servant John McGregor, 15-19, ag labourer
All born county
* he could be a farmer and a merchant, i believe
Think this is a long and varied search. I'll do some more looking tomorrow.

ah - so it might be that a few of the family went over there. Coutts could have been from his wife's side though.
I read your other thread about his marriage. Gordon is very much an Aberdeenshire name, as Ross is an R & C one. maybe they met and married out there.
Have you asked on the Emigrants to Australia Board. There might be people who have access to records there.

Hi leanne
Although the IGI entries all contain exact dates, 4 of the five are "submitted" records, so they should be verified against parish records to ensure they are correct. This can be done for the expenditure of 1 credit (about 45 cents Oz money) at ScotlandsPeople. This is the most reliable source for Scottish records online. The IGI has quite good records for Scotland, but submitted records should always be checked. Extracted records probably should be checked too but I usually accept them & only go to SP if I want more details - parish records and certificates.
I checked SP and only found the 5 children as per the IGI, so it would seem there are no more (unless they were baptised outside the Church of Scotland - seems unlikely).
The names on SP are transcribed as Alexander Thoms Ann Moria Hellen Maria Willina
Shame they didn't go to Victoria - the death indexes give surnames of parents which would help check for daughters in Oz.
Who died first? Alexander or his wife? The Australian death certificate of the one who died first would usually be more reliable as the spouse would normally provide the details. I gather you haven't found any immigration details? If you can find his shipping record, there may be other family members on the same boat.
There is a possible family on the assisted immigrants into Victoria among this lot is a 37 year old Alex & a 36 year old Eliza - probably not yours but possible - ROSS ---- MRS - APR 1841 ARGYLE 2 456 ROSS ---- HUSBAND WITH - APR 1841 ARGYLE 2 449 ROSS 002 CHILDREN WITH - APR 1841 ARGYLE 2 456 ROSS ALEXR I APR 1841 ARGYLE 2 447 ROSS ALEXR 37 APR 1841 ARGYLE 2 447 ROSS ALEXR 12 APR 1841 ARGYLE 2 449 ROSS ELIZA 36 APR 1841 ARGYLE 2 449 ROSS EMELINE 28 APR 1841 ARGYLE 2 447 ROSS RICHD 9 APR 1841 ARGYLE 2 449 ROSS WM 6 APR 1841 ARGYLE 2 449 http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=24
You would need to check the film to determine the family groups
A death certificate/transcript (cheaper in NSW) for the Rev Coutts may provide detail of the relationship.
Posting some queries on the Oz board may get more information (as mentioned by Gadget). If you do that, link to this thread, it helps folks check what you have already said/found.
