H i all , Can anyone one advise me how i can further my research , my gt aunt Eliza Ann married a Frank Havelock Pepper in 3rd. qtr of 1903 Leicester , how can i go about finding if they had children , the only other thing i know is that in 1920 , they were living in Rathbourne Place in the Urban District of Leicester (discovered this on a death cert where Eliza was informant )
You could try the birth indexes at ancestry or Free BMD - you could enter the surname Pepper (leave first name blank) plus Eliza's maiden name and the county Leicestershire. Narrow the search from the date of marriage - usually couples produced a child within 5 years. It may mean taking a chance, but particularly if Eliza had an unusual surname, it will probably work.
Yes, thats the easiest way w/o looking in archives for Rates, Voters lists etc ...
Be aware tho that Mothers Maidename wasnt indexed until later on in 1911/12 .... the gap twixt the 1901 census and this indexing improvemnet is a big barrier - altho with a name like Pepper you may be luckier ?
If you find a birth in the index that is a possibility (not long after the marriage, family name - often names of grandparents etc) it's always worth writing to the local register office (Leicester is quite helpful, I've found) and ask for the certificate if the parents are . . . and . . . .
Also, death certificates sometimes have a child as informant.
It must be wonderful to come from a wealthy family where people leave wills that name every child and grandchild still living!
Hi Lesleyhannah, Thank you for that am i right in presuming that you have to be a member of ancestry to use this service , i have looked at ancestry before , but i must be thick !!!!!!
i do agreee with you regarding the register office they are very helful , i have rang up before when looking for death record's and they have been most helful oddly enough never thought fo ringing them regarding birth's !
Newfster was right the mother's maiden name wasn't given in the indexes till 1911, but if you post Eliza Ann's maiden name here someone will look it up for you - or FreeBMD have the same search options for free!
It would be quite likely that the couple would still be having babies in 1911, so you may very well be lucky.
Hi again , Eliza Ann's maiden name was Holyoak , forgot to say thank you to Newfster who also answered my request , sorry newfster and my thanks and thank you once again Lesley.
