Now if they came from Kirkcudbrightshire, George, I've got lots of info from there.
Who knows you might be my distant cousin
Kirkcudbrightshire is in the far SW of Scotland and Orkney is in the far NE but there was the sea

Somewhere (as he was an old army pensioner) I have a list of all those in KKD who served in the Napoleonic Wars.
I'll have to dig them out

okay are these all the children of William Linklater and Margaret Brown...if they are it seems like the middle names give clues to previous generations ... hopefully
WILLIAM BROWN LINKLATER 29 OCT 1826 Sandwick, Orkney
ROBINA HOURSTON LINKLATER 16 JAN 1831 Stromness, Orkney ANN WATT LINKLATER 16 AUG 1823 Sandwick, Orkney
MARGRAT LINKLATER - 10 APR 1808 Sandwick, Orkney
big age/birth gap .....

IGI both extracted records
GRACE SMITH CANTLEY Birth: 17 JUL 1835 bapt. 24 SEP 1835 Walls And Flotta, Orkney, Scotland Parents NATHAN CANTLEY & MARGARET MOAR
Gadget will know more...but I think the mothers maiden name is given as middle name to the child on occasions in Scotland? This is a good bet that his mother is Grissel Smith, or is it his grandmother, late... losing the plot already
Marriage : GRACE CANTLEY Spouse: JOHN WILSON Marriage: 25 DEC 1856 Walls And Flotta, Orkney, Scotland
1851 - Grace in same place working as servant to Stout family
Parish: Walls; ED: 1; Line: 5; Year: 1861. John Wilson 27 Grace Wilson 25 Margaret Wilson 3 Isabella Wilson 1 Margaret Cantle 75
Parish: Walls and Flotta; ED: 2; Line: 7; Year: 1871. John Wilson 38 Grace Wilson 35 Margaret Wilson 13 Isabella Wilson 10 John Wilson 8 Nathaniel Wilson 5 Isaac Wilson 3 Charles Wilson 1
Parish: Walls and Flotta; ED: 1; Line: 23; Year: 1881. (Looks like death of Grace, 6 February 1880 at North Side, Walls, Orkney.- possible remarriage? didn't take him long!) John Wilson 42 Maria Wilson 36 Isaac Wilson 12 Charles Wilson 11 Thomasina Wilson 9 Anne G Wilson 5 Jemima R Wilson 1 IGI Ancestral file for Annie Grace WILSON 24 Nov 1875, Longhope, Orkney, Scotland. mother's name or some other ancestor's name is often used - I've got surnames from both sides in my lines
Also Margaret could be More/Moar or Muir (and other variations). Muir was fairly common in Orkney at one time.

"William Linklater Census: - Occupation HBC (Hudsons bay Company) Sasines give tenancy of a farm called Garth and later, various other buildings in Stromness. Sasines give Wife as Margrat Broun"
