Robertson/MacLennan
« on: Tuesday 15 January 08 15:33 GMT (UK) »

Archibald Robertson born in 1866 - son of Hugh Robertson and Catriona MacPherson. Archibald was an estate worker at Ness Estate. He was married to Rebecca MacLennan, born in 1865. Her parents were Kenneth MacLennan and Christine Scott. Archibald and Rebecca lived at Culduthel Lodge, Inverness until 1947. Has anyone any information on these families?

Hi Ev,

I would like to know the birth dates of Hugh and Catriona, the date of their marriage and of any other children born to them. Thanks

hi alexena

not making much progress so i've decided to try and track archibald
back through the census returns

1901 culblair ploughmans house petty inverness'shire
archibald robertson age 32 born skye inverness'shire
rebecca age 31 born lochbroom ross'shire
then 3 children william age 8 alexander(6) and christina(5)

is this them ? the ages seem a bit out
there is an archibald robertson b 1866 sleat(in skye) inverness on
the IGI but his parents are alexander robertson and catherine mcpherson
just wonder if this is them ?

Hi Ev,

I think you are spot on. Archibald and Rebecca had a son William who was born in 1892. There was another son named Alexander, who became a mental nurse at Craig Dunain hospital and a daughter named Christina who emigrated to Australia. There was another son named Kenneth who lived in Inverness.
Archibald died in February 1947 at the age of 81 and Rebecca died ten months later in December at the age of 82, so the ages are a bit out according to the 1901 census but it does look like the right family.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello Alexena,

From the IGI  www.familysearch.org

Children born to Kenneth MaClennan and Christine Scott - all 'extracted' entries.  Looks as though 'your' Rebecca was the youngest.

I've access to the 1881 census - shall go and look at that now  - for both sides of the family -  :O)

I lied - off I went to the IGI again - after taking note of what 'ev' had posted .

Children for the Alexander Robertson and Catherine McPherson are:

Note the 2 Marys - possibly one died and a later sibling named after her.

Copies of all birth marriage and death extracts can be obtained on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (a pay per view site -with some free stuff).  £6.00 will buy you 5 extracts.

Off now to the census.  :O)

Are you sure that this is 'your' family?.....

If Alexander is the correct Robertson - here is his family with Archibald in 1881

Dwelling: Cottage
Census Place:  Sleat, Inverness, Scotland
Source:  FHL Film 0203427  GRO Ref  Volume 115  EnumDist  7 page 5

                                                     married     Age    Sex     Birthplace

Alexander Robertson. Fisherman    M             60      M   Sleat, Inverness, Scot
Cathrine      ''              Wife              M            50      F    Sleat, Inverness, Scot

Mary            ''              Dau.  Scholar                10     F    Sleat, Inverness, Scot

Hopefully your response to 'ev' will sort out if I've wasted my time - hopefully not - but I'm a slight obsessive.  My wife would say more than that   :O)

Off to zzzz shortly.

Good luck with your search..  :O)  Cathrine copied as transcribed.

Archibalds parents would be on his death cert/entry as indicated by 'ev'.
Foolishly haven't even looked at SP  :O( - assumed that 'ev' did..........

Hi Ev,

Hugh Robertson & Catriona MacPherson were the parents my daughter found for Archibald, when she was researching at St Andrew's House in Edinburgh. The date you have for Archibald & Rebecca'a marriage would be correct. I don't know if Rebecca had a brother named Angus. I have just had some information
re- her siblings from Steve which I will have to digest.

sincerely Alexena

hi all

on igi
alexander robertson married catherine macpherson
24th november 1857 sleat inverness'shire
i think the only way to be sure it is them is to obtain the
marriage cert of archibald and rebecca
if we are on the right track then maybe the 4 death certificates
for the parents could be obtained
as steve says 5 certificates are 6 pounds on scotlandspeople

Hi Ev,

I have registered with Scotlands People but I haven't been able to find a marriage for Archibald and Rebecca. Where did you find the 1894 date?

regards Alexena
