Stockton Look-up - Watkin Crozier

I have a WATKIN CROZIER who married an ancestry of mine ISABELLA REED in 1858 in Newcastle.

He was born abt 1827 in Stockton, Cumberland.

Have looked on the IGI with no luck.  As per his marriage certificate he was a mariner and his father was JOHN CROZIER who was a Husbandman.

Can anyone find his birth for me on old parish records ?

Where is Stockton Cumberland?  How many census records have you found them on?  Is it always Stockton?

Hi Andrea,

As per Genuki, Skelton is a parish in the ward of Leath. 

In 1841 Census - William Crozier -  bn abt 1826 in Cumberland - working as Ag Lab in Glassonby, Addingham, Cumberland - This is in the ward of Leath.

In 1851 Census - Wilkin Crozier - bn abt 1826 in Skelton Cumberland - working again as Ag Lab in the parish of Lazonby, Cumberand.

In 1861 Census - William Crozier - bn abt 1827 in Skelton Cumberland - working as a Labourer in Westoe, Durham. 

His marriage certificate which we got had him as Watkin Crozier and his occupation was a mariner.

It is all very confusing with the changes in names!

I can't find him or his wife Isabella in the 1871 census onwards, however their daughter can be found as an "adopted daughter" living with another family called Blythe in Westoe.

Ah, that would explain why I could not find him!   Ag Lab to Mariner is a bit worrying!  I wonder if one of his ancestors married a Miss Watkin?

Was thinking overnight about what was found on the IGI.

Why was only the mother recorded at the christening ?  On Watkin's marriage certificate his father was mentioned as John Crozier.  Could Isabella have been a widow and if so would that have been mentioned in the parish records books ?  Would anybody be able to look in their local library in Cumberland please ?

It would certainly be worth looking at the original register to see if it gives any further information by I suspect he may have illegitimate - father Mr Wilkin perhaps?   Many people made up fathers for their wedding so as not to lose face with their new in laws.
You can get the film of the parish register to search at your nearest LDS centre and it may hold many helpful clues.
