U.S. records are mainly held by individual states. If you know what state/states the Barlows lived check to see whether they have death indexes online or even available at all. If you've checked the U.S. census records already you should have an idea of when first wife Mary 'disappeared' and wife number two appears.

There's a naval base in Newport, Rhode Island so that's probably why the picture was taken there. Boston is in Suffolk Co., Mass. (not Southern).
Could this be your James Barlow?: Dr. James P. Barlow (age 86) died Sept. 7, 1966 (Boston Obituary Index).

The Social Security Death Index has a James Barlow born 17 Dec 1879 and died Sep 1966. His last residence was Belmont, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, and his Social Security number was issued in Massachusetts.
There is a WWI Draft Registration card for James Pollitt Barlow living at 90 Brighton Ave., Allston, Suffolk Co., Mass. He was born on the same date as above. He was a naturalized US citizen. It's a bit hard to read the bit about his occupation, but he was some sort of engineer for the US Govt. in a town in Norfolk Co. On the next page, it says "Is an osteopathic Physician at present working as an (illegible) engineer." His wife was Jessie E. Barlow at the Brighton Ave. address. He was listed as short with a medium build, gray eyes, and sandy hair.
There is a WWII Draft Registration card for a James P. Barlow born on that same date in England. He was living at 65 Gardner St., Allston, Suffolk Co., Mass. He was employed by "self dr." at 100 Boylston St., Boston. The person who would always know his address was Jessie E. Barlow. He was 5 feet 11 inches tall and 175 pounds with gray hair and eyes and a light complexion.
It looks like your James was the doctor.

Several 'Richard Nokes' on LDS site. Including a Richard Maurice Nokes b.c1927 son of Maurice Yale & Sarah (Shelmerdine) Noakes.
It is possible that the man in the photograph wasn't related at all. My mother's brothers were in Army and Navy during WWII and forever bringing friends home on leave or if they couldn't get away they'd send the friends to the house anyway (one of them ended up marrying my aunt). My grandmother had lots of photos of the friends and some continued to keep in touch for years with Christmas cards, letter with pictures of their children and grandchildren and even came back to visit.

John Barlow is my Great Grandfather.
You asked in the 1st post when he died. John Barlow died 17 Oct. 1905. His is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford, MA. I have a letter dated Sept 1888 from his employer, saying he is leaving for the US and he is a reliable worker.
I am not sure about Mary's death. John Barlow’s 2nd wife Annie Brooks came to the US from England in 1891 & their child (Dorothy/my grandmother) was born Aug 1898. After John died, Annie remarried.
Most of what I know is already in the previous posts, but here is what I can add: James was the doctor. In the 1910 census, he is listed as “son in law” to the head of the house. From that, I believe his wife’s maiden name to be Jesse E. McDowell. I have found 3 daughters in census Alice, Gertrude and Shirley. (When starting this research, my father seemed to think that James had 4 girls, I have only found those 3). I don’t know married names of all the daughters (or if they did marry). Maybe this is where your picture comes in(?)
The child Annie (age mentioned in the 1900 census, is also a child of John Barlow and Mary. Annie married Howard Heald. They lived in Binghamton, Broome County, NY. She died in 1973. They had one son.
I am so pleased to find someone else researching this family. I would love to know any information on family in England and would, of course, be willing to share more. I am curious your relation so I know what kind of information may be of interest to you.

Hi Lisa, Welcome to Rootschat England.
John Barlow b1855 (your Gt Grandfather) married Mary Pollitt (the sister of my Gt Grandfather John Pollitt Jnr) at St George's Church, Hyde, Cheshire in 1879. Mary was the daughter of John Pollitt Snr. and Mary Yates (the last of 8 children). John Pollitt snr (1805-1854) was the Schoolmaster of Denton School House, Denton, Lancashire, a Clerk of the Chapel and Superintendent of the Sunday School. His wife Mary (1805 - 1884) was Schoolmistress. Both are buried St Lawrence Church, Denton, Lancashire.
John Barlow and wife Mary, prior to leaving UK for America, lived at 39 Haughton Green Road, Denton, Lancashire. I have a photograph of this house taken 2006 which I will get to you these coming days.
Archive Photographs of the area can be see here >
http://www.tameside.gov.uk/history/archive.php3
Scroll down the opening page and tap in 'Haughton Green'

The whole Barlow family gave Hyde in Cheshire as their place of birth.
Back again soon. Ray
