I'm looking for help in tracing my Gt Gt Grandfather Thomas Atton. He was born around 1831 in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England. He was married to a woman named Mary Ann, and he had three children: William, Martha, Thomas.
Thomas was a stonemason, and there is a story in the family that he left his family to find work in America - however he never returned back to England. This story seems to add up as there are no further Census records for him or even a registered death in England.
I do not know which year he left England, however it must have been after his third child was born in 1870.
Can anyone help me find out what happened to him or if there are are any census records or Death records for him in America? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thomas & William are both on the 1901 living in the same road - Mary A aged 62 is living with Thomas & his wife and is shown as a widow
Now - an interesting 1881 census for West Bromwich
Thomas Parker 41 bricklayer b Handsworth Mary Ann wife 40 b Gateshead (same as 1871) Ruth 17 b Birmingham William Hatton 16 b Smethwick Thomas Hatton 10 b Smethwick

Hi CaroleW,
I do have that census with them in Smethwick, which was the only one that I could find with them as a family!!
I knew of the one in 1901 also, however the new information you have found sure is interesting. I know there areslight differences with Thomas' surname and place of birth, however the info with the wife could mean she is the same person... would have to see if there were any other Mary Ann's from that area marrying a Thomas Parker. However if she is a Parker aswell, then so is the Ruth, and the William and Thomas must be the same as the others in the 1901 Census (they were my Gt Gt Grandmother's brothers).
I know William and Thomas Atton's were both travelling stone Masons and Builders so perhaps they are staying with this family and they are apprenticed to Thomas Parker. My Gt Gt Grandmother was often refered to as Hatton (even on the marriage certificate) which of course was wrong spelling!

Hi,
are the Hatton brothers on the 1871 census as well... or is the 1871 further information on the Parker family before the Hattons were with them 10 years later?

This is really interesting!!!
With regards to this then, I found the 1901 Census, by where it states that Mary Ann was living with her son William and his wife, and her other son is living in a house in the same street with his wife.
I do know where Mary Ann is buried, and she is buried with William and his wife and also William's son Edward. Mary Ann is still refered to as Atton on the inscription.
Perhaps this relationship didn't last long then?!

Hi
You need to check the 1891 census for both of the families to see whether they were still together
The 1901 shows Mary Ann as a widow - Thomas Parker may have died by then

Yes I think I will have to do that. I noticed she was divorced, however I do not know if that would refer to a marriage with Parker, because on the marriage certificates for William and then Thomas in 1901 it states that their father Thomas (the one rumoured to have gone to usa) was deceased, so the Widow part may have to be linked with this case.
Perhaps Thomas Atton and Thomas Parker were friends, having both been in the bricklaying / stone mason trade... if he did go to america, he would have certainly left his wife without any money and the means to live in their own house, hence possibly the fact she had moved in with Thomas Parker. Interesting theory though I think!

Oh yes I can't believe I've missed that also... but if they were both widowed and capable of being in a relationship, why would Thomas Parker be refered to as a visitor. Surely if they were together they would have been living together as a couple.
I'm totally stumped with this one... perhaps this does indicate the fact that they were friends for all that time... it also gives me the reason why Thomas and William became bricklayers themselves if they were taught by Thomas Parker when they were younger.

It does seem odd that if both were widowed and were in a long term relationship - why didn't they marry at some time?

That's my thinking as well... and as I said especially with Thomas Parker being refered to as a Visitor.
I've also just looked on the bmd page and it looks like Thomas Parker died in West Bromwich in 1901. His age and birth year matches up!
