My Faithful Friend
John Albert Shellard

I am looking for a birth or a death of John Albert Shellard.

He married in Brentford in 1938 to a Kathleen Eva Mardell.  According to this John was 32 and she was 24. 

The last address I have is them living in Kingston, Surrey. Kathleen his wife died in Kingston. 

I dont know where John Albert was born but his father's name was William Henry Shellard.

I have searched everywhere for him but I cant find him.

Any help would be appreciated.

Any clues in the witnesses to the marriage?

The only Shellard I can find who was a Fishmonger (in historical directories and censuses) was Daniel Shellard of Bath, born about 1862/3 in Bristol.

An Albert John Shellard was born in 1906 in Bath district (freebmd). It's possible Daniel Shellard of Bath, fishmonger, was a relative of William Henry's (older brother, father, uncle, cousin?) and William went into business with him, eventually taking over.

A likely possiblity for William Henry Shellard is the one b. 1870, m. 1904 in Bath (father Henry).

The witnesses to the wedding was M A Buntings and W F C Shinn(?),  names that as yet mean nothing in my family.

I havent got a Daniel at the moment either but anything is worth a try.  The only way is to order the certificate and see if this one in bath has any connection at all.  There might be something on it that will match.

This information really helps as at least there is a fishmonger connection.

After looking at the birth for 1906 in Bath, I have just found a death for 1906 in Bath.  It looked like this John died at birth. 

Oh dear!!!

I will try one I have found in 1909 Bristol.  He may have told a porky on his marriage licence.  Wink

This is definitely a brick wall.   Undecided

I have looked at the births you all gave me but they are not connected to my family.

I found a birth in Marylebone in 1906 with parents of William and Eliza.  However it just said John on the certificate and his name was John Albert.  Also his father's occupation was Butler which is possible.  It doesnt however give me any definite leads that this is John Albert.   

I have looked for a death for John.  He died between 1949 and 1980 but I cannot find one in the area they lived.  Their last address was in Richmond, Surrey.  His wife died in 1980, a widow in Kingston Hospital, Kingston.

Can anyone possibly look at the PR's to find his death, or give me some ideas.  Huh

Messrs Buntings and Shinn could have been the parish professional witnesses and not related at all. You would need to look at the surrounding marriages in the register to find out.

If you are willing to post the date and place of the marriage, I'll check it out for you at the London Metropolitan Archives. I can only check though if the place of marriage was a church, the register office would still have 'registry office' weddings.

Hi Dawn,

Thank you so much for offering to help but sadly I dont think you can.

The marriage is between John Albert Shellard and Kathleen Eva Mardell.  Unfortunately they were married on the 14.12.1938 in a Registry Office in Brentford Middx.  Registered Brentford Dec qtr, Vol 3a p694, entry no 167.  John, bachelor, 32 and Kathleen, spinster, 24.

I've just made a quick phone call to Brentford Register Office in Hounslow, the lady there was very helpful.

The London Borough of Hounslow didn't exist until 1965 so at the time of the wedding, it came under Ealing.

She suggested contacting Ealing Register office by phone in the first instance to see if Messrs Bunting & Shinn appeared elsewhere in the registers, explain that the names aren't recognised by the family.  If they weren't forthcoming try writing with a copy of the cert and asking, failing that ask if you can 'pop down' and have a look. If you're too far away, let me know, I'm about 6 miles away.
