how to find an english marriage
« on: Tuesday 15 January 08 18:42 GMT (UK) »

hi

i don't have much experience of english marriages, i have found a birth in 1941 in hammersmith of dorothy a woodley, mother's maiden name bowley.
I am looking for the marriage between her parents but i can't see it on ancestry.
Does anyone know a better way of finding it?

Hi Caroline,

freebmd indexes aren't complete, so for later marriages I'm afraid it's a case of ploughing through the years on ancestry or findmypast quarter by quarter.  How far back did you go?  Do you know of any older siblings to give an idea of the marriage date?

ok

thanks i wasn't sure,

i looked 2 years back fom the birth certificate, i'll keep looking, there's no rush.
i know very little as it's not my family, i'm just trying to put together a family from an old album we are looking after.  it was in my late uncles album which is why we have it as it has very old family photos in it.  However, it also has a collection from his second wife who died young without children.. In the album is the letter informing a family that their son has died in ww1.  This got my interest and i am trying to put together a family  Cheesy

Sounds really interesting, I love old photo albums, but I do wish they'd written names and dates on them all (as I'm always intending to do!!)

I've had a look back from 1941-1936 inc. and no sign - so at least you know where they're not
 Wink

Have you looked up the son on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site, if he died in the war he should be there, and there may be more information on his family

thanks for taking the time to do that!

yes i have looked on the commonwealth site, from that i have found the little soldier in the 1901 census.  I am just trying to work out which off his siblings is the link to the woman born in 1941.

Just to remind you that any reference to possible living people shouldn't be posted on the public boards though....

Oh I can't believe I didn't go back just the one year earlier!

You can either order from the local register office (possibly quicker)
http://www.rootschat.com/links/02k2/

or the GRO

Here's the link to the online GRO site for certificate ordering:

thanks barbara  Cheesy

the marriage was between may f bowley and charles b wodley.  I'm trying to do the bowley's as i have them in 1901, i went on freebmd and may florence bowley was born in 1909 in paddington.  its pretty likely that this is the same may bowley isn't it? i need to confirm her parents, if i order her birth certificate will this do that?

right, i ordered the birth certificate, i think that if that shows she is the daughter of the right couple then that will be enough proof that she goes on to be the mother of the lady who's album i have, i mean you wouldn't have another family's photos with 'mum' and garandad written onthem would you?

Sorry, didn't get to reply before you ordered the cert.  I don't think there'd be many May Florence Bowleys about so it should be ok!

The birth cert should show both parents and father's occupation, mother's maiden name, place of birth and address

Just say if there's any more help you'd like

Hi Barbara

The certificate came today, it is definetly the right family, it says mother elizabeth bowley formerly warner and father frederick william bowley.  In 1901 elizabeth's unmarried sister was staying with the family so i know what her maiden name was Wink

only problem is that the writing on the certificate is really faint, do you think i should say anything?

Hi Caroline,

Great   Cheesy

If you're not happy with the quality of the certificate, I would contact them and let them know
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/contactus/Certificate_services_section.asp

don't forget to put GQ in the subject line of an email to them or you get an automated response, perhaps best to phone them

Good luck,
Barbara
