Footie on the Wirrall
« on: Tuesday 15 January 08 21:33 GMT (UK) »

Hi

I've just come across the photo below.  It was with others from my grandfather which were nearly all 1920's or 30's in Tranmere/Birkenhead.  I cannot establish a family link so maybe it was just a pal and his team.
Anyone any ideas about the team?  My guess is that it's probably a local or works team but I really don't know so any ideas would be welcome.
It seems odd that most guys have the club emblem on one side but the chap front right has his on the other breast.

Cheers

Doggy

I understand that this post was probably a longshot  Sad
However, does anyone out there have any suggestions as to where else I could post it or if there maybe another site which might specialize in these items.

Hi Doggy

The local  free newspapers might be worth a try - they often feature old photographs and readers can write in with their suggestions or memories.

The newspapers are The Wirral Globe and The Wirral News .They are published weekly and delivered
throughout Birkenhead and Wirral.

Good Luck

Neptune

P.S. Both photos are great.

Not sure they had shirt sponsorship then but that triangle on the shirts looks similar to the Bass brewery company logo. Maybe a brewery or pub team.

It seems odd that most guys have the club emblem on one side but the chap front right has his on the other breast.

I reckon they stitched them on themselves so maybe he mucked it up a bit  Cheesy the guy next to him has it under his armpit Cheesy Cheesy as for the guy with out one he was probably new to the club and didn't have his yet. Undecided

Regards

Hi Stewart
Thanks for your ideas, I'm not sure about the pub team idea though, it looks a bit too organised and official.
Could be a works team, I also wonder if it could be a forces team as my grandfather was in the RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps) and one or two of the faces look similar to photos I have of the RAMC with my Grandfather.

Cheers

Hi Mrsscouser

My only Edwards is a Mary from the 1770's in Ruabon.
My Gee's (also Ghee) were originally from Nantwich I think and later millers by trade on the Wirral also some boron in Chester and Liverpool.

Cheers

Maybe but I would have expected to see at least one person in military uniform. I think you are right about it not being a pub team though. Is there anything on the reverse side that could help?
