Slingo
« on: Friday 01 February 08 08:53 GMT (UK) »

Hi all.  I am desperately still trying to find what happened to my Great x4 grandfather Thomas Slingo after he was granted a Free Pardon in 1846.  He was sentenced to 10 years transportation in 1841 for stealing a ewe however he never left England spending his time on the Leviathan hulk and then The York.  His wife Jane Javes (Jarvis) remarried in 1857 to David Cook at Chertsey, Surrey so I presume he must have died by this time.  The information in the LDS records of a Thomas Slingo married to a Jane Javes (Jarvis) living in Richmond, Melbourne, Australia is incorrect.  This Thomas was born in 1807 in Oxfordshire and was married to a Mary Ann Turner.   My Thomas was born in Crondall, Hampshire in 1799.  I have been unable to find any record of him in the GRO index, in the Hampshire records or in immigration records to America or Australia.  Any other suggestions of where I could look Huh   Any info at all would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Jenny

Jane Slingoe is with the Javes family in Crondall in 1851 (with Timothy Slingoe aged 14) and is listed as married HO107/1680  Folio 27 Page 25, so presumably Thomas was still alive then.

Hi Jenny,
I suspect this is your posting on the Communigate page Huh

http://www.communigate.co.uk/hants/slingofamily2/page13.phtml

I can see Thomas in 1841 at Crondall with wife Jane & family (HO107/394/bk 5/10/14)
No sign of a death after 1846 on FreeBMD.  Like you, I would presume he had died prior to Jane's re-marriage in 1857 but that might not be true as I think she could have claimed desertion.  Have you seen her marriage certificate as this will state whether she was or not.  Again, she might have lied  Undecided

Can't find Thomas Slingo on the 1851 or 1861 census using all spellings, so he might have died.  Have you checked the full GRO indexes?

Hi Jane, Shaun and Pauline.  Thanks for replying to my request for info on Thomas Slingo.  I have posted info on the Communigate site.  It's owned by a distant cousin and anything I discover about the Slingo family I send to him so that he can add it to his website.  I have Jane's marriage certificate to David Cook and she is described as a widow however as stated she could have been telling fibs.  As mentioned the 51 census records her as living with her brother Thomas Javes and his family and also her youngest son Timothy.  Of Thomas Slingo however there is no sign.  I would have thought that his death would have to be recorded somewhere but I checked the BMD under numerous spelling variations and still no luck.

Thanks again

Just a comment.

I, too, have a relative who seems to have been "abducted by aliens".

We tend to take official records at face value.  I've begun to suspect that lying - to census takers and other officials - was a lot more common than we like to think.
