John HAMPSHIRE was born - but I can't find his birth or baptism! His nephew's will of 1746 refers to "John HAMPSHIRE, my late uncle".
He had two sisters, Margaret and Christian, baptised 1673 and 1675 respectively at Cassington. Their father was William HAMPSHIRE. There may also have been a third sister - Maria HAMSHEIRE (sic) baptised in 1689 at Cumnor - and their mother may have been Margaret, but these two last facts are unproved.
Christian was married at Cumnor and then moved to Eynsham where her 11 children were baptised (one of whom was the nephew mentioned above).
A John HAMPSHIRE was buried at St. Leonards, Eynsham, in 1742 (which would fit with him dying before 1746).
Any help finding John's birth/baptism would be much appreciated.
There is a John Hampshire from Eynsham married to Mary Knapp also from Eynsham at Oxord St Mary Magdalen on 23 Oct 1740. This would fit in with the dates.
The other offering from OFHS is the Search Services, for which there is a small charge to support the Society. One of the databases is a baptism index. Courtesy of OFHS, here's the result of a search for you:
Many thanks for your reply. I had spotted the HAMPSHIRE/KNAPP marriage at Oxford and agree with you that this could very well be "Uncle John". A check of the Eynsham PRs reveals no offspring for this couple.
Thank you for checking the OBI for me - but do I assume that the "wavy line" means that there was nothing found, or has something gone amiss?
Also, I wonder if you can offer any advice on the following. A Rootschatter has found a burial for me which reads:
WASTIE :Ann
Is there any significance in the colon ( - perhaps indicating an abbreviation? (I'm searching for the burial of a Christian WASTIE at Eynsham - nothing recorded under this name, but wondering if the ":Ann" could be a shortened version of Christian?)
Hi The OBI just shows an Ann Wastie buried at Eynsham im 1743, no age given. It maybe that even if her name was Christian she may have been known as Ann. Eynsham seems have been a centre for Wastie. There were 16 burials in the 1700s plus others in the 1600s and 1800s. Derek
