John Heywood Clerkenwell
« on: Wednesday 16 January 08 00:04 GMT (UK) »

Hi
My Gr Grandfather x4  John Heywood  born devenshire pops up in Clerkenwell Middlesex in the 1861 census 5 Frances st   st James, district 10.

He was a Lithograph printer aged 36,he was there with his wife Ann and children.Ihave managed to locate them on the 1891 census at Clerkenwell,London. the address was 32 Brunswick close, in the area of Goswell? He is a printer age 67 living with his wife Ann.

Iwould love to be able to locate John and family on the 1871,1881  census so i can identify all the children, also it would be nice to know if he was around in the 1901 census at the ripe old age of around 78.If anyone has access to these census i would be very grateful for any information

Thanks
phillH

Hi,

What looks like Selina (but transcribed as Lewis!) is on the 1871 -I think she is one and the same person as Elizabeth on 1861
If you look on 1861 Elizabeth is Elizabeth A S heywood

and I think that is her birth reg I posted Dec qtr 1853 Elizabeth Ann Selina Heywood

so it may be she was using her 3rd name Selina in 1871 (often happens)

Hope you understand my ramblings

Doesn't look like they are around in 1901

But I have found them in 1851 if you require that census

Thanks Suz, i do have the 1851 Census, if you have the entry you will note that John is from Shebbear Devon, but it says Stonehouse Devon in the 1871 census, or is he a lithograph printer in a stonehouse  Shocked

Hi Suz
that Stonehouse entry is quite interesting.Heres why, Johns wife ANN was born in Buckland Filleigh, as it says on the 51/61 census i have also located her baptism. On the 71/81 census she mentions she was born Peters Marland, this happens to be where her father was born, the family spent some time here(so did Ann).
John Heywood, was born Shebbear, devon as it says on 51/61 census,i have located his baptism, he was a "Base" child to a Margaret Heward (Johns name is given as Heywood on his marriage certificate) I have been unable to trace this Margaret Heywood any further which has been dissapointing as Heywood is also my name. John says he is from Stonehouse on the 71 census?I just wonder if his mother came from Stonehouse,i checked and there is a stonehouse in devon, its in Plymouth, which is quite a distance from Shebbear where John was born.
On Johns marriage certificate, even though he was illigitimate,he gave his father as William Gill, he was born Hatherliegh which is nowhere near Plymouth.
So,there seems to be a stonehouse connection,i know its a long shot but maybe worth investigating. What do you think, maybe i should move this to a different section of the forum?any advice?

Veryoften p.o.b. is given as somewhere they lived as a child -maybe Stonehouse was where his mother went to live -but as census are 10 years apart we sometimes don't associate tplace because it doesn't appear on the census.

It could also be a simple case of "that's what it sounded like to the enumerator"??

Was William Gill his father -and how do you  know he was b. Hatherleigh?

I'll have another look around -and now!!

Hi Suz
from john heywoods marriage cetificate, john was living in Exeter, his father was William Gill  Inn Keeper. I checked census  returns and found william gill Innkeeper/Victualler on the 1841 and 1851 census for st Pauls Exeter Devon, the 1851 census gave place of birth as Hatherliegh. The directories name the pub as the Anchore Inn. William Gill was married to Jane,i traced his marriage to 21.8.1826 exeter st Mary, to a Jane Fairchild.

I have traced William Gills baptism to 13.3.1803 Hatherleigh (fits nicley with age on census returns) parents william and Ann.  I am pressuming that Margaret (Johns mum) was young when he was born illigitamate by Wiilliam Gill that would make Margaret Heywood born around 1803  John was born 1822.Maybe Margaret married soon after having her son Johnwas born? hope all these dates and names dont get too confusing :-)
