Can anyone cast any light on Cookridge Hospital in Adel-cum-Eccup in the 1880s? Was it a specialist hospital for some form of affliction? A relative of mine, Amy Boyle, was a patient there in the 1881 census, and Adel seems a long way from where the rest of the family were located, so it seems unlikely that she was suffering from a "run-of-the-mill" affliction.
The census returns for 1881 show patients ranging in age from 12 to their 60's, with perhaps twice as many men as women - no real clues there, I think.
A related mystery is the whereabouts on census night of Ann (or Anna) Boyle, Amy's mother. She is not with her husband (who is recorded as "married") and son in Leeds, and Ann likely died in 1885. I suspect she might have been staying as a boarder somewhere in Adel to be close to Amy, but haven't been able to find her!
Thanks for any help Tim

PS, if anyone would like to have a go at locating Ann, she was born in Leeds in 1831 +/- 1 year. She is not staying with her married children.

Thanks Woodydog, yes that is useful. So it seems that she was convalescing, possibly after a spell in Leeds General.
I interpret the phrase "admitted on the recommendation of a donor or subscriber" to imply that the patients were somewhat above working class. This is interesting, because her father was in a traditionally low paying profession (cork cutting) yet in the 1871 census the family had had 2 servants, suggesting he had succeeded where many had failed. Yet, by 1881, with the older children all married off, he and his remaining unmarried son were boarders in Leeds ... his wife, Ann, being absent from the census, as mentioned in the original post.
Cheers Tim
