Please can someone shed some light on the occupation on one of my relatives.
John Rowlett born 1847 in Castor Northamptonshire and I have information that he is onboard HMS Boscawan at the time of the 1871 census. By the 1881 census he was onboard HMS Asia as a Royal Marine Light Infantryman (AB).
What was his occupation in 1871? What did he do between the two census dates?
Many thanks DEREK

He was not actually on board the Boscawan in 1871; he, along with a number of others, is described as 'borne on the ship's books but not on board'. He was a private. Someone a few lines higher up is described as a sergeant in the RMLI, so presumably John Rowlett was in the marines from 1871 to 1881.
