Muiravonside place names
« on: Wednesday 16 January 08 11:21 GMT (UK) »

I have successfully found most of the farms belonging to or run by most of my people in Stirlingshire but I am really stuck with one, found on the Cenuses and in a Will.
I have found Whiterig, Middllerig, Standrig. Drumbowie and Drumbroither bu cannot find any trace of an area called Farrinrig. I think it was maybe near Park Hall on the Vellore estate or possibly near Manuel. Has anyone any ideas for tracing this.
I have tried Googling but without success.
All advice most gratefully received.

Hi Chris

Have you tried looking at any of the old maps listed here:

http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/counties.html#stirlingshire

I've found lots of old farms using this resource.

Regards

Hi

I've found it as Furrinrig. It's NE of Crossrigg to the west and south of Parkhall. Will try and get the map details but the NLS maps open in a seperate window:

I used this map:

http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/453.html

The map ref on my screen is :

www.nls.uk: Maps: Viewing 74400119.sid

Locate Candie and go just to the NW of there.

Steve

I think this is a copyright map - that's why I didn't put it up but explained where it was.

Better remove it, me thinks  Undecided

Gadget, you are a wonder! Thank you so much. I went on the site you gave and it is brilliant, I'm going to send for a copy of the map. It will be so useful.
Again, very many thanks.
Chris. PS Thanks to Piglet also.

It's a brilliant site, Chris. I found a farm in D & G that I couldn't find on any other maps on there a few years ago.
