« on: Wednesday 06 February 08 16:42 GMT (UK) »

I downloaded a gedcom file from the family search site. How on earth do I look at it now. My computer keep saying that it needs to know how it was created to be able to open. Help !! What do I do now?

Have you got  a family tree software program installed on your computer?

In order to open the gedcom file you need to have an application like a family tree program.

Oh I see. I have got one that came free with a Daily Mail that I have not yet put on the computer. Do you think that might do? It is made by GSP.

Hi,

It may not be very satisfactory, but if you are impatient to see what is there you can open a GEDCOM file in Notepad/Wordpad or even Word. It is only a simple text file, but follows very strict syntax so that a Family Tree program can incorporate it in a database.

Here is a sample (words in CAPS are roughly equivalent to column headings in a spreadsheet, @...@ are references which connect it all together  Grin):

0 @I287@ INDI
1 NAME George /Loveland/
1 SEX M
1 BIRT
2 DATE 30 OCT 1823
2 PLAC Shalford,Surrey
2 SOUR @S7@
2 SOUR @S5@
3 DATA
4 TEXT Baptised on 04/04/1824
1 DEAT
2 DATE 24 FEB 1904
2 PLAC Godsden Common,Shalford

Which translates to:
George Loveland
male
Born 30 OCT 1823 Shalford,Surrey
Baptised on 04/04/1824
Died 24 FEB 1904 Godsden Common,Shalford
