I downloaded a gedcom file from the family search site. How on earth do I look at it now. My computer keep saying that it needs to know how it was created to be able to open. Help !! What do I do now?
It may not be very satisfactory, but if you are impatient to see what is there you can open a GEDCOM file in Notepad/Wordpad or even Word. It is only a simple text file, but follows very strict syntax so that a Family Tree program can incorporate it in a database.
Here is a sample (words in CAPS are roughly equivalent to column headings in a spreadsheet, @...@ are references which connect it all together ):
0 @I287@ INDI 1 NAME George /Loveland/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 30 OCT 1823 2 PLAC Shalford,Surrey 2 SOUR @S7@ 2 SOUR @S5@ 3 DATA 4 TEXT Baptised on 04/04/1824 1 DEAT 2 DATE 24 FEB 1904 2 PLAC Godsden Common,Shalford
Which translates to: George Loveland male Born 30 OCT 1823 Shalford,Surrey Baptised on 04/04/1824 Died 24 FEB 1904 Godsden Common,Shalford
