I am hoping someone will be able to help me. I am trying to trace my great-grandmother, Rosetta Jane Cutts. She was born c. 1861. She does not appear on the 1861 census so I assume she was born mid-late 1861, or even early 1862. Later Census returns give her place of birth as Balderton, Nr Newark and her reported age (9 in 1871, 19 in 1881 etc) ties in with the assumed birth date. The problem is that her birth does not appear on the BMD indexes for the relevant period (I have checked them individually for quite a wide date range) so I have not been able to find out who her parents were to trace the line back. The problem is compounded by the fact that she was living away from home for both censuses - as "visitor" in 1871 and servant in 1881 respectively - so I have no family details. The only clues I have is that her marriage certificate, in 1882, shows her father as "John Cutts", a groom, from Newark, possibly Balderton. In addition, the woman she was visiting aged 9 in 1871 was a former Cutts, Martha, also of Balderton.
My elderly mother has been unable to help. She says she only met her grandmother once although Rosetta was alive until she was 11 or 12. However, she does remember the "grown ups" talking of a family scandal in the Notts area involving the daughter of a big house and the gardener around the time of Rosetta's death. She thinks that John the groom may be the man. Who knows whether there is any element of truth in this though interestingly, most of her other childhood memories, however vague, have proved to be largely accurate to date.
I would appreciate any pointers anyone can give me to help me trace where my great-grandmother might have belonged within the Cutts family. I am not looking to prove any grand connections. I would just like to know where I come from, however humble.

Welcome to Rootschat!
This looks a tricky one - but there is nothing rootschatters like more than a challenge!!!!
it looks as though her birth must have been registered under a different name - possibly her mother's surname if she was illegitimate, or born before the marriage. I have tried enterring just 'Rosetta' and 'Newark' and two births come up:
Rosetta Batty Jan/Feb/MAr 1861 Augusta Rosetta Bottamley oc/nov/Dec 1861
The first may be worth pursuing. If she can be found on a census ('71 & '81) that you already have 'your' Rosetta on, then she can be ruled out. Otherwise it would be worth looking for this baby Rosetta in 1861 to see clues about her parents.
Another track I would say is worth pursuing is the Martha nee Cutts that she visits. Clearly would appear to be a rellie, so I would trace her as much as possible to see what comes up. canw we finr her birth, her on censuses, then any siblings - would one of those be Rosetta's mum? What have you already on Martha - name/age/ place of birth etc from censuses?

Well - just ruled out my own suggestion!
Rosetta Batty seems to be on 1881 census, age 21 RG11 3751 123 8
- so that cant be her!

Hi Wendy and welcome...
My first instinct is to trace back Martha's family and see what comes up (she liked wedding cake didn't she?! For anyone else looking, Mr Surguy was her third husband, following Mr Pegg and Mr Pettit).
I know you've probably been looking for a while, but did you find any potential Johns in the family?
Also who were the marriage witnesses and have you accounted for them... and has anyone checked Balderton parish records for you?
Sorry so many questions but I don't want to go over old ground.
Heather

Thanks all for your replies and suggestions. Unfortunately however, I have already tried most of these, including checking the Rosettas (and Janes) born in and around Notts, Lincs and Yorks at the key time, tracking poor much-widowed Martha's line back, checking all the Cutts families in Balderton, tracing all the John Cutts, etc, etc alas all without identifying a likely candidate that I can be reasonably certain of.
Lizdb: just to close the Rosetta loop, I can confirm that Agusta Bottomley (sic) is accounted for in the 1871 census.
Heather - the wedding witnesses idea was a good one I hadn't thought of. However, I've drawn a blank again: one was the elusive John Cutts, the other was a lady with what seems to be the most common name in Nottinghamshire in 1881!
If someone could check the Balderton registers for me I'd be grateful. Smudwhisk: can I take you up on your offer unless someone else gets a chance to check for me first?
On a completely separate note, please could a Moderator PM me and let me know why my original post was edited? I printed my message out immediately after posting and the two versions look identical to me!
Thanks again
W

Does the marriage certificate give an address? My family - Cutts - came from Newark, but so far can't place your groom John. However, they often change occupations so won't rule him out as being one of the siblings I haven't followed up. There were a few gardeners but none called John. What was the common name of the witness - I may just recognise an in-law or married daughter.
I don't have Martha on my tree though, so it may be a branch we haven't linked up with so far. Any information you have about her might give me a clue.
I think it probable there is a link, if only we can find it.
