One of my Fathers Sisters was born and registered in the 2nd Quarter of 1898 in the District of Banbury. On the 1901 Census her place of birth is shown as SIDFORD GOWERS, DEVON. My Grandfather served with the Wiltshire Regiment from 1888 - 1901 so I am assuming this is or was an Army Depot of some description. Can someone please help with this. Thank you. Grannie in Canada

Hi Grannie....
It looks like a mistranscription .
There is a Sibford Gower to the west of Banbury .
Sibford Ferris nearby.

I suppose Gowers could be a house or farm at Sidford although the name doesn't ring any bells for me. I have family still living there and will ask around and let you know if anything comes of it.

hi Could I suggest you give us the name or the full reference for the 1901 census so that others can have a look at the actual image. Remember Banbury is in Oxfordshire usually shortened to Oxon so it is possibly a misreading of that which has lead to a transcription error. Also Banbury area is a lot nearer to Wiltshire than Devon is.

Hi It is definitely a mistranscription, possibly in part caused by the enumerator squeezing 2 entries on to the bottom line of the page instead of carrying forward to the next page.
Definitely Oxon on the original.
Ancestry by the way has transcribed it as Gibford Gower, Wiltshire, again possibly being confused by 2 entries on the one line, the other child on that line, transcribed as Typhina Louisa looks like that on the original whereas you have a different spelling, presumably from a different transcriber.

Thanks Tazzie & stinton Lomas for solving this long standing problem. Certainly a long walk from Devon. As I said, I had always assumed this to be another stop on the road of my Grandfathers stint in the Army. Another item off my "to do" list. Thank you to all who read and replied to this query. This is a wonderful site for those like myself who are far removed from the UK. Grannie in a very wintry Northern Ontario Canada.
