Sir Robert Gostwick family
« on: Saturday 19 January 08 10:12 GMT (UK) »

Hello All,
Does anyone have any details regarding a marriage between Charles Armstrong of Stonestown, Ireland & a daughter of Sir Robert Gostwick of Willington, Beds (Christian name unknown)?
Charles was born in the mid-1600's.
Thanks,
Bob

What else do you know about Sir Robert Gostwick, as I have been unable to trace that he was part of the Willington family?

Burke’s Commoners, which is not particularly reliable, states that Charles Armstrong married a daughter of Sir Robert Gostwick of Wellington, Co. Antrim, but I can’t find such a place in Antrim.

The Visitation of Bedfordshire shows a Sir Edward Gostwick who died in 1630, but he had no son or siblings named Robert, nor did his son and heir, also Edward, who was born 1619

Similarly the Victoria County History of Bedfordshire also makes no mention of a Robert who could have produced a daughter who married in the second half of the 1600s.

Perhaps Burke was correct when he stated that Sir Robert Gostwick was from an Irish family, and it’s just coincidence that there was a Gostwick family in Willington, Beds. But generally I don't like coincidences!

Hello David,
I got the info on Sir Robert from "An Account of the Armstrong Family of Ireland, 1775" by John Armstrong of Ballycumber, Ireland. The 1775 date may be out, possibly should read 1754.
One of Charles' brothers was Thomas (b1661 in Stonestown, Ireland) He was a Commissioner of Land Tax in Ampthill around 1717, & Thomas died in 1747/8 aged 86.
If it wasn't for the Beds connection, I'd have guessed that Willington was an error. However, tied up at some point in this puzzle is Admiral Byng - of Southill fame.
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Castlebob
Don't know whether you already have these will from the National Archives documents on line

Will of Roberte Gostwicke or Gostwick, Gentleman of Warden, Bedfordshire   30 October 1562

also

Will of Sir John Gostwyke or Gostwick, Treasurer of Willington, Bedfordshire   04 May 1545

There is also this reference in British Chancery Records, 1386-1558  for Robert Gostwyk  Bedford  1533-1538 in Vol6, Page 330 bundle 756 held at the National Archives but not one of their downloadable records

Might be relevant

A summary of the 1562 will of Robert Gostwick can be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~keuttah/rob1558.htm
but it's 100 years too early. I can't find any mention of a Robert Gostwick after this one.

According to Burke's Commoners 1838 Charles Armstrong died s.p. and his estate passed to his nephew. His wife predeceased him as he remarried.
