"Home Children" help please
« on: Thursday 17 January 08 10:55 UTC (UK) »

Hello,
I've recently discoverd I've got distant rellies in the US and now I need to fill in some gaps.  This is what I have found so far:
Marchant family:
In the 1871 UK census they are in Clapham, Surrey
John age 23 shoemaker
Eliza age 26
John George son age 4
Sophia mary age 2
Frances Emm age 11 months

John Marchant (father) died in 1879 London age 33.
More children born in between 1871 and 1879 when he died.

In the 1881 UK census:
Laleham Cottage, Surrey (I think some type of orphanage / home)
Sophia Marchant age 12 orphan
Frances Marchant age 11 orphan
Eliza Marchant age 7 orphan
Sally Marchant age 5 orphan
Then also in the 1881 census Mum and the boys at Victoria Street, Lambeth, Surrey
Eliza Marchant, widow age 36
John age 14
William age 4
James (no surname - Boarder)

My direct line follows Sally Marchant.  She came out to Aust with older sister Sophia.  Both married and died after about 4 or 5 years.  What sad lives they had  Sad
I have Sally's marriage cert.

Sorry if I've got away from the subject but thought it best to inlcude what I know so that someone doesnt look it up unnecessarily.
Now  I have discovered that Frances Marchant went to Canada in 1883 and married Robert Hunter in Nov 1886.  Family say that she saved her money and sent for her brother William.  I think I've found him arriving Quebec June 1886 on Sardinian.

Is it possible to find what happened to Frances when she arrived in Canada (Quebec) before she married.  I do have her in the 1900 census in Hammond, New York .
Also what happened to her brother William.  He had curveature of the spine, but was employed as a telegrapher but dont know where.
Can someone please give me some hints or help as to where I can look.  I'm completly new to US / Canada research.
Cheers, Chris in Australia.

In the 1930 US Census there is a William Marchant who is listed as "uncle" to Lester Hunter and Margaret Hunter living in Hammond, New York.  He lists his year of immigration as 1898 and is 53 years old.

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/home-children/001015-100.01-e.php does list both Frances and William as Home Children.  William came out with Mrs Merry's party, heading to Stratford (there was a children's home there). Most likely Frances also went to one of the homes in Ontario - where was she living when she married in 1886?

You can check with Barnados, who now hold many records not just relating to their children, but to Home Children sent by some other groups as well. They may have something on William and Frances.

Well, that makes sense - the National Children's Home was in Hamilton. You might check there for Frances' early years in Canada.

I don't think that was the home though, cause it's Hamilton Township, which is in the County of Northumberland, which is East Ontario.  Brighton, Campbellford etc. are in that area right next to Belleville, so perhaps she was sent to the Marchmount Home  Undecided

What a wonderful lot of information.   Grin
Thank you Karen for the details and also Jorose. Those web sites look so good.  I will have to have a more thorough look shortly.  I will certainly be writing to Barnardos hoping that they have some answers.

Once children from a 'home' arrived in Canada, did they automatically go into another 'home' and some type of employment found for them.

I'd also like to find where William Marchant is buried.

Many thanks.
Cheers, Chris

Hello again,
I have William Marchant going to Canada June 1886 age 9, but as per Karen's post, the 1930 Census lists his immigration year as 1898.  I guess this is something Barnardos can clarify (hopefully).

More detective work required.  I need to find him in the 1891 UK census.
Cheers, Chris.

The immigration year of 1898 in the 1930 census, might be refferring to the year he went from Canada to USA.

Yes, it should be - so if you can locate the 1891 Canadian census (not easy as that's one of the ones not widely indexed) you might be able to find him on it - perhaps the Hunters, too.
