Hi,

Karen,  for the marriage of Frances Marchant and Robert Hunter, did it say in which church they were married.  On doing a  google for churches in Hammond, I see some beautiful old buildings.
Still looking for that 1891 cenus etc.  Are there electoral rolls I can be looking at?
Thanks Jorose and Karen for your help.

This new addition to the family tree is really intersting - I didnt know about 'Home Children' etc before.
Cheers, Chris

Unfortunatley it dosn't say the name of the Church, but they were married by Hugh Pedley if that helps?

The Home children story is sad, but there are some happy ones.  1 in 10 Canadians is a descendant of a home child.  The problem is alot of them were/too embarrassed to tell anyone.

Once they were taken to a home, they were sent out to jobs, mostly farmers looking for labour.  Some parents never knew there children were sent to Canada.  A home boy, Arthur, worked for my husband's family, he was made part of their family and my mother in law still looks after his grave.

Hello

I've spent hours browsing through Barnardos / Home Children etc websites and found nothing that pertains to my Marchant children, but perhaps I''m not looking in the right places.  But I did find it wonderfully informative and surprised at how widespread the home children movement was.

Thanks very much for your help.  Cheers from Chris.

Hi All,

I've just read this post with interest...

Two of my WARREN Great Uncles were sent to Canada as 'Home Children' in the 1920's. So far, I haven't been able to find out what happened to them...:-(

Although on my Great Grandmother's Death Cert, (Australia, 1959) one of them is listed as dead...

I would love to be able to solve this mystery...& find out what happened to them...

So little to go on though...:-(((

Romilly.

Yeah, Romilly, without the censuses, we haven't a while lot of information...
If there were letters or correspondence about them, some info has been found.
Chris, the property Laleham Cottage from 1881 is up for sale....but no photo. It doesn't seem to be a huge house. The female children weren't orphaned, so it seems odd that they were listed as such...

Hi,
Yes Romilly, its frustrating not being able to find all the bits of the puzzle.

J.J. Both Sally & Sophia came out to Sydney, and married, but died in 1903 & 1908.
There is a possibility Eliza came out with them, but haven't been able to prove this as yet.

Now, something good happened today, so I have to pass it on.
I have been in contact with with decendants of Frances Marchant.  Long story so I wont bore you with all the details, but an earlier generation (than me) in Australia had been corresponding with an earlier generation in the US.  (I didnt know about it) These people are now deceased.   By chance a letter was sent from their children in the US to Australia even tho the person in Aust no longer lived at the address  - and the letter ended up with me.  Whoopee!!!    Grin  Grin      Does this make sense?
I have now been emailed a photo of Frances Marchant and her family.  AND the exact dates of death for John & Eliza Marchant AND the cemetery where they are buried in Lambeth, London.

How good is that  Cheesy

It's getting late, must hit the hay now, but just had to share the good news.
Cheers, Chris

Hi all,

Just an update.
I emailed the Lambeth cemetery and was kindly given plot numbers for John & Eliza Marchant and a cemetery plan.  I asked about headstones, but that info wasn't forthcoming.  I think I need to pay for a search to find out if there is a headstone or to get of photo of it.   Sad

I've posted a query on the London board hoping some kind person may be able to assist.

Just this morning I cheekily decided to  email the cemetery again   Grin  hoping they might part with the headstone info without a formal search request.

Anyhow I'm pretty happy that I have found out about the parents of my 'Home Children' .

I'd love it if anyone could help out with the 1891 census, cos I've not had any luck myself.
Thanks everyone.
Cheers, crom Chris.

Just wondering what Elizabeth Marchant's maiden name was before she married? As I have Marchant relatives that were also Home Children.

Marriages March quarter 1866
  John MARCHANT  & Eliza Poulter  Lambeth  vol.1d   p. 553

and welcome to rootschat!

Using Eliza's surname I found this older thread of yours as well...This shows Eliza is accounted for?
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=11bc5d31f78e6c18a88fc41d81753cd5&topic=170209.0

also here are the Hunter family and William in 1891
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1891/001081-119.02-e.php?person_id_nbr=2229554

Was brother John George b.1865 ever accounted for? I saw a marriage in 1882 Bedminster , but a later death age may rule that one out...but who's to say he used his middle name, I suppose

Hi,
Welcome to rootschat dylansmother and hello again J.J.

Eliza's maiden name was Poulter as shown.

J.J, I haven't been able to find anything further about John George b.1865.  The US family told me he joined the Navy.  I made enquiries to the Royal Navy, but they had no record of him.  It could be the Merchant navy that he joined.  I must admit I haven't followed through on John George Marchant.  It would be great if dylansmother was descended from this line.

I also see from my post back in 2006 I didn't thank Jorose for his help.   Embarrassed   So thanking you now Jorose - learning as I go along.  Smiley

I must get back into the research on this family - its been put to one side - into the too hard basket.

Cheers, Chris.

So no sign of John on the English censuses then? Nothing on the BHC site...( even elder boys came in farm work groups)...but we have found additions so not all are transcribed yet...I'm sure some records will turn up somewhere if he was in the navy  J.J.
