Hi all,
I am trying to find the birth date/ place and parents of my gg-grandfather Edward Jones, ( yes, I know ), born about 1846.
Edward Jones married Jane Ball ( daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Ball ) on December 26th, 1869, at Wrockwardine Wood. I have a copy of the Marriage Register entry but, unfortunately, the entry for Edward’s father is simply “deceased”, with no name. The witnesses were Thomas and Ellen Payne; Thomas Payne was a Forge Manager and, since Edward was an Ironworker, presumably Edward’s boss and his wife.
I have found Edward and Jane in the 1871 census with children Elizabeth (3) and Richard (5 months) living at Wrockwardine Wood ( RG10 / 2809 / 74 / p 37 ) and Edward, now a widower, in the 1881 census with children Elizabeth (14), Richard (10) and Martha Jane (8) again at Wrockwardine Wood ( RG11 / 2681 / 69 / p 17 ).
In each of the above census records, his birthplace is given as Church Aston, Shropshire. However, I have searched through the Church Aston Parish Records but without success.
I believe I may have found Edward Jones in the 1861 census, aged 15 working as a “cow boy” at Abbey Farm, Lilleshall, Shropshire. ( RG9 / 1902 / 78 / p 11 ). In this case, his birthplace is given as Aston, Shropshire; which only narrows the search down to about a dozen villages and hamlets!
So, except for a remarkable coincidence in parents’ names, it would appear that Edward and Jane’s first two children may have been named after Jane’s parents. So could Martha have been named after Edward’s mother or grandmother?
Where was he in 1851 census?
Any advice or a nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Maurice

Hi Pete,
I looked at this one, knowing Aston in Shifnal, but thought it perhaps a couple of years too early.
From the two census records where I am sure I have the right family, Edward's age is given as 25 in 1871 and 34 in 1881. Though not definite, this would suggest a likely birth year of 1845 to early 1847.
Regards,
Maurice
