Hello everyone

I would be grateful if anyone can answer this puzzle.  I'll keep it brief ....

1. In 1855, in Helensburgh,  Scotland,  My Great G/F James b. 1836 in 'Co. Sligo' married Ellen Cryan also from 'Co. Sligo'.  Both were 19 yrs old.  James' surname was shown as 'Davidson'.  A daughter was born the following year when everyone's surname was now spelt 'Davis'.

2. They subsequently moved back to Ireland and according to parish record transcriptions in National Library, Dublin for 1865, a son James (my G/Father) was born in Carrigans, Ballymote as 'James Davys or Doon'.  His father was also shown as 'James Davys or Doon'.

3. Family lore suggests that his father had deserted the family, returned to Scotland and that the birth was in fact illegitimate.

4. I am unable to trace original parish records and so the transcription is frustrating.  The question is:  was the transcriber unsure of the surname, or had the priest been hinting at something .... or is there another answer.  This has puzzled me for years and is preventing me going further back.  All suggestions gratefully received.

5.  Other family members emigrated to the USA.
