Islandeady - McGowan
« on: Friday 18 January 08 04:08 UTC (UK) »

My great-great grandparents were Martin McGowan (b. abt 1824) and Mary Coyne (b. abt 1829). They were married in Islandeady on 11 Apr 1846 with witnesses Patrick McGowan and Bridget Chambers. All except Patrick emigrated to Canada in 1847. The church record transcription I found didn't have the parents' names listed.

I know quite a bit about the Coyne family, since a large number of them emigrated to Canada or the US around the same time. I was hoping to learn what happened to Martin McGowan's other family members, assuming they stayed behind. I don't know his parent's name, although I've seen an 1834 tithe allottment for Islandeady that mentions a Peter McGowan.

As I understand it, there are no census records that survived from this period. Any suggestions on how to go about further research?

Hello mmcgowan,

It's sometimes hard to know where to research further when you think that you've found all there is to be found but I'm certain that there are still valuable items of genealogical interest to be found in Ireland. I posted a message on Wednesday which mentioned the complete 1821 census for the parish of Forkhill, Co. Armagh, being found in a set of estate records that were still in private hands and had not been donated to an archive.

Hello,
Did you know that Islandeady civil parish has a second, smaller church and cemetery in Glenisland, about 10 miles north of the main Islandeady church? I see from their website (islandeady.ie) that there are several McGowans buried in Glenisland cemetery, but none in the larger Islandeady cemetery.

I also see from Griffith's Valuation for Mayo (1856-7) that there was an Anthony and a John McGowan, both from Knockbaun townland, which is in the Glenisland area.

I visited Glenisland this past March, my great grandpa was from there.
Good luck in your search!
