Herefordshire Prize Cattle c1875 - 1885
« on: Friday 18 January 08 14:51 GMT (UK) »

Hi,
My gt grandfather, Sam Brown, (1855 - 1937)  lived all his life in or around Pembridge.  He was employed as an agricultural labourer and worked as a 'cowman', labourer, gardener and so on.  He appears to have worked on several farms but I am very interested in the fact that, according to my father, Sam went to the USA with some prize Herefordshire Cattle and exhibited them in the World's Great Fair at Philadelphia.
I believe the date of this was 1876 but am not entirely sure that Sam attended this actual Fair or perhaps a later one.  His eldest dtr was born in 1878  and then there was quite a few years before his other children were born.  So possibly he may have travelled after 1878???

If anyone has any information about the passage of Prize Herefordshire Cattle to the USA I would love to hear about it.  From various censuses I do know many names of the farmers for whom he worked and have also discovered a few farmers who kept these prize herds.

I am so interested to discover when Sam may have travelled to USA, how frequently and so on and so on.

Any information on how to search for his passage information, Herefordshire Cattle information or other relevant information would be very much appreciated.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

The Hereford Cattle Society on www/herefordcattle.org may have information - they produced a book each year, and still do with all the breed winners details etc.
Also as it is the village of Pembridge that he worked in, then Google the village website or the site for the Leen - a farm famous for its Hereford Herd and home of one of the founders of the breed.

Many thanks for your help with my query, I am extremely pleased to receive it.
I have now looked at the website you sent and 'Googled' Leen Farm and the village of Pembridge.  As a result, I have emailed a contact on the three sites and, hopefully, may learn something soon.
Incidentally, I didn't say in my original query on which farms my gt. gt. grandfather worked (well, those I knew from the census etc.) It turns out that Leen farm was one of those farms......... and my sister met a man in Pembridge in 1996 who also remembered Sam working there.
I hope this is a good omen!
The other farms where I know he worked were:
Yarkhill, Westonbury Court, Pembridge (with Pedigree Hereford Cattle owned by Mr. Russell)
Leen Farm, Pembridge (also owners and showmen of Pedigree Hereford Cattle)
Broom Farm, Eardisland (or Pembridge?)
Twyford Farm, Pembridge.
I wonder if these farm names may help to click with anyone's memory?
Thanks again,
Myra

Many of these are farms linked with the development of the Hereford Cattle Breed . There are wonderful plates of prize cattle in the Hereford Record Office, by the photographer Bustin, and many of those people and animals have been identified and dated by an expert who lived in Pembridge until his death.

I am sure you will find enthusiasts able and very willing to help you in your quest.

Thank you.
I have sent emails to some contacts found from replies to my post and hope to learn more from their replies.

I think then a trip to Pembridge would seem to be in order!
