Murder in Cambridge
« on: Friday 18 January 08 17:30 UTC (UK) »

Hi, Can anyone help pls, i want to find details of a Murder in Cambridge of 12 yr old Betty Langford in 1946, she was murdered by her Uncle in East St. Cambridge (sexually motivated) and died of brain damage in Fulbourn Mental Hospital and he hung himself in the next room to where they found her on 11.07.1946 and she actually died on the 8/81946.  Many thanx.

A quick look on the Cambridgeshire Libraries website says that they hold on microfilm:

Cambridge Daily/Evening News 1888-current
Cambridge Independent Press 1815-1981

I should think there would be something reported in the press - is that what you mean when you say you want to find details?

How well do you know Cambridge?  I don't know of an East Street in Cambridge today.  There is an East Road.  And Fulbourn Hospital is still in existence, a couple of miles outside the city.

Hi Jo Jo
Sorry it was East Road, my mistake, i have the Death Certificate, the fathers name is Bertie Langford and looking up Births her Mothers maiden name is Anderson and it was an Anderson that murdered her, so he is on the Mothers side. I just want any info that can help me perhaps trace it back to my Langfords in my tree, i.e., age of father or siblings that might help me find a marriage cert. of parents etc.  That's all, a lot I know, but u never know someone may be able to help me.
I dont know Cambridge at all i'm afraid.
Thanx anyway i'll look up yr info tho.
Regards Margaret.

Hi Denise,
It was Sidney Charles Anderson, if u would like a copy of the death and partial newspaper report pm me with yr email address and i'll forward it to u ok.
That's all i know about Bertie William i'm afraid altho it does seem as tho he was deceased in 1946 on the cert., as its a bit faded under his name as the Father. If u want  a copy let me know and see if u can work it out.

Hi Mags

He seems to have been just Bertie (rather than Bertie William) at marriage:

Marriage, Mar qtr 1931

Bertie LANGFORD
Kathleen M. ANDERSON

Cambridge 3b 723

Anna Smiley

Added: If he was Bertie William (does it say that on his daughter's death certificate?) then this may be his birth:

Sep qtr 1903

Bertie William LANGFORD

Cambridge 3b 466
