boatpeople - looking for links
« on: Friday 18 January 08 20:23 GMT (UK) »

Hi, I'm looking for links or publications about boat families.  I've had a search and found very little.

I would like to know about their way of life in general.  I am interested in wether these families originated as farmers/laborers and possibly took to the canal systems in order to make a living.

I would be most grateful if anyone has any suggestions.

many thanks  Smiley

An author called Anne Murray has written a couple of fictional books about life on the "cut", one of them is called Water Gypsies, can't remember name of the other one. She did a lot of research on the subject and I'm sure it mentions the sources she used, theres also a glossary of terms used by the boat people.

People of the Kennet and Avon Canal by Clive Hackford.

L. T. C. Rolt (1910-1974), an engineer and industrial historian, had an interest in canals and the families still living on and working canal boats. He purchased a converted narrow boat on which he and his wife lived in the late 1930s and 1940s. He wrote about their experiences in "Narrow Boat" which was published immediately after WWII. "The Canal Boatmen 1760 - 1914" by Harry Hanson was published by Rowman and Littleford in 1976.

Have a look at the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum website. There are many links.

A visit there would be of help. Plenty to see including the cottages.
