LEAVER family
« on: Friday 28 March 08 22:01 GMT (UK) »

Hi could some one help with a look up at St Giles Reading Berks.  I believe one of my ancestors was a Betsy Leaver born circa 1830 (parents George and Ann Leaver).  Betsy was christened in St Giles Reading on 24th October 1830.

Could some kind soul if they are going to the Church in St Giles Reading possibly check the Parish records firstly to confirm the above, secondly if Betsy's date of birth is shown and also whether there is any marriage entry for her.  If so the date etc.

She is shown as being married to my gg/father John Birmingham but I cannot trace the marriage cert there is however a marriage shown to a Thomas Burmingham 1857 4th quarter.  As the name Thomas does not appear in any census I am wondering if John was his second name or if she indeed married another member of the family.  She also would appear to have emigrated to Canada/USA as she had 2 children (twins) born there however the family then shows up in the UK 1861 census with no indication of when they returned.  So you can see my dilemma, firstly to see who Betsy married and secondly the date she was born and married.

Thank you so much in advance.

Hi Ann,

Having looked at the 1861 census I see daughter Jane is 10, so the 1857 marriage doesn't look right, unless she had Jane from an earlier marriage or before marriage Huh
The twins are only 2, so the gap is perhaps either because of that, or because of going to the USA.

Birth registration for  Jane Elizabeth   Leaver    Dec 1851  Reading  6 250

Might be worth someone checking parish registers for this also, to see if her mother was Betsy/Elizabeth

Berks FHS have just published transcripts of the St Giles PRs on CD - much cheaper than travelling to Reading.
