Hi! I am searching for the decendents of the Tholander family. They changed their name to De La Tholandes probably. The husband, Elieser Tholander, was born in Sweden 1827. He was a provision merchant and ships chandler. He lived in the house "Villa de Portugal" in Snakes Lane 46?, Woodford, Essex. His wife, Maria, born in Portugal 1839. Their daughter, Maria, born in Woodford 1876 and their son, Elieser/Eliser, born 1878 in Leyton, Essex. I know that Elieser and Maria lived in "Villa de Portugal 1868-1871. My grandmothers grandmother was at this time a servant in this house. After that, she went back to Sweden again. I really want to find decendants to this family but I do think I need some help!
Best wishes Lotta Karlsson, Sweden

1901:
Villa de Portugal, Snakes Lane
Eliesar Tholander, Head, 75, Provision Merchant, Sweden (British Subject) Cissie Tholander, Daughter, 25, Essex Woodford George Plense, Visitor, 28, Shipping Clerk, Denmark (Danish Subject) Alice Austin, Servant, 18, Domestic Servant, Kent Maidstone
I can only imagine Cissie is Maria. Eliesar is listed as being married so maybe Maria (Wife) was out of the country?
I don't know how common the name Tholander is but there was also
Oscar Tholander, Master, 56, Married, Gothenberg Sweden (British Subject)
He was on SS Cameo and was in Grimsby Lincolnshire.

Thank you Emma for your help! It is very useful information! Augusta Ohlin was my grandmothers grandmother. And the Tholander family had several servants from Sweden. About Oscar Tholander, what is SS Cameo? And is it possibly for me to have a look in later census to see if I can trace the son and daughter?
Regards, Lotta

Hi Lotta,
This is the information from the Births, Death & Marriage index. As you can see it is for Thomas B E Tholander (Formerly Eliser!) and it shows when he was married. Unfortunately there are three men and two women on the page so there is a woman's name missing...Dorothea Darton or Eliza Neat could have been his wife, or typically(probably!!) it would have been the missing woman!
Name Year Quarter District County Volume Page Carpenter, Alfred Joseph 1902 December West Ham Essex Greater London 4a 537 Darton, Dorothea Ellen E 1902 December West Ham Essex Greater London 4a 537 Neat, Eliza 1902 December West Ham Essex Greater London 4a 537 Phillips, Frank 1902 December West Ham Essex Greater London 4a 537 Tholander, Thomas B E 1902 December West Ham Essex Greater London 4a 537
The next census release for the 1911 census is not until 2011 so you have a bit of a wait!! You could order a certificate of the marriage as you have the volume(4a) and page(537) number and the name of one of the couple. Go to http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/marriages/obtainingmarriagecertificates/ and you will find all the information there.
Hope this helps!!
Regards, Emma

Thanks again! ???I tryed to order the certificate of the marriage but I had to write the exactly date for it. December 1902 was not enough. Or maybe I have missunderstood?

Thanks!!! The pictures have arrived! I could see Oscar Tholanders name, but I had problems in reading the text after the word Sweden. Maybe it could be important. Have you any idea what it says?

Hi Lotta, Just to let you know that I have some interesting papers that relate to Elieser Tholander. They are legal documents regarding a 400 pound loan from a Mrs Sarah Anne Barber against Villa de Portugal and the repayment of the loan. The loan was taken out on the 14th June 1865 and paid back on the 17th June 1874. These documents are in a metal document case with the name E THOLANDER above a pair of crossed flags. I hope this helps put a bit more info towards your search. Regards from sunny Australia Roger
