This is probably a wild goose chase based on the information that we have but does anyone have any suggestions on how I could possibly find out the death date of a Canadian bomb disposal officer who died during peace time. Charles C Simmonds married Joan Pledge in 1943 in Croydon Registration District. Joan is/was my Dad's cousin. The story goes that he swapped shifts with another officer as a favour and was unfortunately killed trying to defuse a bomb. The problem we have is that nobody within the family can quite remember when this happened. The story also suggests that Joan and her children returned to the UK after Charles' death - again we don't know the names of the children. Can anyone suggest possible ways of finding the death. I've tried the online indexes available but some do not go far enough forward. No luck there.
Any help appreciated.

Do you have the original marriage certificate? Knowing his middle name in full might help as well. Any memory in the family of where in Canada Charles was from?
I don't have the marriage certificate as yet to confirm his middle name. I have just picked up what I think is Joan going out to Canada on 6 August 1945 from Liverpool on the Drottingholm. Judging by the number of house wifes listed and the ages, it looks like a ship that took out a lot of war brides. However when I originally looked at the war brides site I didn't pick anything up.
The last know address in UK was CMHQ London. Would that be something like Canadian Military Headquarters or am I being too obvious there?
Unfortunately as far as I'm aware there has been no contact between the two halves of the Pledge family for many years and those that may have known information on Joan's family are long since dead (the last of my Great Aunts died 26 years ago) and neither my Dad or his brother can remember much about them - there was a fair age difference between the cousins. Have to see what I can find out.
Thanks again.
