where is Skelton, yorks?
« on: Saturday 19 January 08 09:27 GMT (UK) »

Does anyone know the whereabouts of a place called Skelton in Yorkshire?? Just found out that it is the birthplace of an ancestor of mine around 1783. She spent the rest of her life in Newholm-cum-Dunsley near Whitby.

Any help appreciated!!

Skelton is just north of York - off the a19. It has a very attarctive church and a number of old houses near the centre

There are some other possibilities.  If you check on www.genuki.org you'll see there are 8 Skeltons in Yorkshire.

The one you want may be Skelton in Cleveland, which is about halfway between Middlesbrough and Whitby

You'd perhaps need to check parish registers to be sure

I also have ancestors from around Skelton, earliest times till about 1900. What names are you researching?

Hi TomFE

I only have one name in Skelton at present and that is Burton.

Sarah Burton says she was born Skelton Yorkshire on all census' and her birth year would be somewhere around 1783, yet going by the age she gave at marriage it would be more like 1776!!

On IGI there is a baptism for Sarah BURTON in Skelton By Guisborough

b: 29 JAN 1778
c: 30 JAN 1778

parents Jonathan and Mary BURTON.

This is the Skelton near Saltburn so could be the one.
