...so many "trees" - what's a dog to do!
|
Can anyone shed light on a place or dwelling named Caulfieldhill, in the Canonbie area?
I have a transcript of a headstone in Canonbie churchyard which reads:
In memory of Margaret Byers spouse to Samuel Beattie who perished at Caulfieldhill April 8 1826 aged 27 years
On reverse of above stone:
In memory of John Beattie of Thorniewhats, who died aged 68 on 28th October 1769. Also his spouse Jannet Holiday who ….this life 11th February 1775 aged 56 years
I know of the John Beattie couple and Thorniewhats, but I'm curious about Samuel and Margaret - in particular the term "perished", which suggests some sort of accident, possibly a house fire?

Thanks, ev and juliann1 !
This seems to indicate that Caulfieldhill was an area or place, rather than a single dwelling.
My next question is : what were the local newpapers for that area c.1827 - to see if there might be some indication why Margaret (Byers) Beattie's death was referred to as "perished" !?

There's this in Wauchope Churchyard, outside Langholm:
… In memory of JANET MOFFAT daughter of George Moffat and Agnes Clark who died at Caulfield 15th May 1860 aged 2 years …
I'd assume that was the Caulfield up on the hill opposite the cemetery, and not really in the Canonbie area.
I wonder if it could be around Caulside, on the Canonbie - Newcastleton Road, just before the old county boundary, that's certainly nearer Thorniewhats.

A bit late perhaps to add to this thread but I know a little about Calfield (Caulfield) which is actually to the West of Langholm. It was originally inhabited by Scotts and appears to have been owned in their own right as they were referred to as the Scotts of Calfield. Thomas Beattie's, in his diary (1788-1821), which is in the Dumfries Ewart library, describes the Scotts of Calfield as among the most prominent families in the county in the time of his grandfather, after the Scotts of Davington. My ancestor, William Scott of Meikledale married a daughter of James Scott of Calfield in the 1720's. Another daughter married Gilbert Elliot, father of Major-General William Elliot of Larriston. William Scott of Meikledale spent all his life in Canonbie so any contact between Calfield and Canonbie would not be so improbable. James Scott of Calfield later became James Scott of Beltenmont and his son was a vinter in Dumfries.
