Hi Chasbaz,

I believe some of my ancestors were in Turnham Green at this time, by the name of Farrington and Chapman.

I'm not sure where they married, but John Farrington (1775-1822), who was a Farrier, married Mary Sweet and settled in Turnham Green / Chiswick where they had 8 children.

I also know of Sarah Ann Chapman, who married James Farrington (a labourer / gardener) in 1825.  As she was born c.1803, I wonder if she is the daughter of  Abel Chapman?

You may also be interested to know of Mrs R.Ward, who has access to the 1801 Chiswick census at:

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your reply.
Send me an email at chasbazx@telusplanet.net [remove 'x' before use] and I will send you the will of Abel Chapman. I haven't read it all as it is a bit hard going but it mentions his nephew John Chapman on the first page.  I have a copy of part of the 1801 census already but didn't see any Chapmans or Farringtons on the pages I looked at. Thanks for the contact though.

Best wishes,
Charles

Hi Charles
I don't have any of the names you mention but I do have a John Cuthell bookseller of Middle Row Holborn who lived at Turnham Green in 1806 when he wrote his will and was still there in 1828 when he died and his widow Ann died there in 1847.
The Times Death Notice
Death 29 May 1828 at his house at Turnham Green, Mr John Cuthell of Middle Row Holborn bookseller in his 85th year, most sincerely lamented by his afflicated wife, relatives and friends.

Hi Carmel,

Thanks for your contribution.  I only have copies of the lists for the more easterly part of Turnham Green, so it may well be that your ancestor lived in the western part, i.e., closer to what is today regarded as Turnham Green.

If you have not already done so, you will find that if you contact the local studies librarian at Chiswick Library you will receive a helpful reply.  Except that she has just retired and her replacement is not on board yet....

Hi Brenda,

Thanks for the will details.

Like my previous reply, I am only looking at the easterly end of Turnham Green and have not come across the name. The Chiswick library holds the 1801 census and ratebooks, so they may appear there.

I will of course let you know if I come across the Sweet name in the future

Best wishes,

Dear Charles,

I suppose East Turham Green is that which jutts onto Chiswick (does that include the Royal Horticultural Allotment area?).

Anyway my real reason for writing is that I have a Henry Charles Green who was born in Chiswick in 1797 (so it says on the 1861 census - he died in 1866 in Hammersmith).  Anyway Green was a grocer.

Something very interesting about this family.

Henry had two children both born in Shadwell (tower hamlets)

1) Catherine and
2) Henry Charles jnr

Catherine Green married Alexander Richard Croucher, a Physician.
Alex was mayor of Hastings in 1892-93.

Henry Charles Green married Sarah Mary Browne (my ancestor).
Henry began life as an architect, but he was later the first Mayor of Ealing (1901)

Happy to find out if you locate any more Green's in your research.

best regards

Hi Andrew,

Re your Greens, the only Green I find in my records is Phillip Green, who may be your man's father.
The Overseers List for 1802-3 gives:
Mr Sketchley
Mr Pratt
Mrs Love
Count de Varreaux
Phillip Green   <====
Richard Dunster
John Staynes
George Perry
Joseph Harper
William Smith

Turnham Green does include the old Horticultural Society garden.

The pages I have of the 1801 census for the area (may be incomplete) do not contain any Greens.  I suggest you contact the Chiswick Library to have a search for you.

Best wishes,
Charles

Could I please be taken off the list for messages re Turnham Green as I am receiving emails for replies that have nothing to do with my families.
Thanks

Hello Charles

Just to let you know I have ancestors with the surname of Hobbs in Chiswick.  The earliest information I have on them is 1841 William Matthews and Caroline Matthews nee Hobbs.  On the census I have of Fishermans Place  Chiswick there are quite a few Hobbs.

Best wishes

Hi Ewan,
Thanks for your reply.
If your Hobbses are in Fishermans Place it means they were near the river. There was an extensive fishing industry at that time. I know that Fishermans Row (formerly elegantly named Sluts Hole) was a row of cottages between St Nicholas' Church and the river.  Some of the family may have lived further north in Chiswick I guess.  If you find any other evidence of their locations that will be helpful.

Best wishes,
Charles
