Ah. . . showing my ignorance there, bearkat.  Embarrassed

Thanks for those. I have to go out for a while, but I'll see if I can make any connections later.

Sorry, I thought it was mentioned in one of your previous threads.

Great resource - people with ancestors from Boldre are very lucky.

I've been trying to remember why I recognised the name 'Scanes' since I started this thread, and I finally dug it out. Henry and Mary Scanes were witnesses to the marriage of Thomas Foss and Hannah Stride on 27 Jan 1828. Adding that to the other evidence, I'm just about convinced that Mary and Hannah were sisters, and that Mum44 was right about Sarah being Henry's second wife . . . thanks Mary  Smiley . . . I sure hope the marriage certificate confirms it . . .

Now all I have to do is tie in those names from Comyn . . .  Undecided

The marriage certificate just arrived for Henry Scanes, widower, shipwright, and Sarah Day, spinster, both residing at Lymington.  Smiley

I think I'm now safe to assume Mary Stride was his first wife.

Henry's father was John Scanes, shipwright. Sarah's father was John Day, builder, which doesn't quite match the baptism that Mary found:
Quote
A Sarah Day was baptised 13 June 1800 in Lymington, parents Joseph and Elizabeth;  she was born 11 May 1800

I suppose John and Joseph might have become confused in transcription . . .

Both bride and groom and one of the witnesses signed with 'their mark', suggesting they were considerably less well educated than my ancestor Thomas Foss, son of an Ag Lab, who wrote so eloquently in his journal. Was Beaulieu blessed with a particularly good schoolmaster, I wonder?

Just had a further thought . . . did anyone look for Mary Scanes death in Lymington?  Smiley

Hi Mike -

read your post, and re-visited the disc and my notes: I'd started at Jan 1799 - and, going backwards therefore, find:

Sarah Day bapt. 29 July 1798, daughter of John and Elizabeth Day.

Sadly, the vicar in 1798 didn't put birth dates on, unlike his successor, so only baptism date shown for this one.

How about Mary Skains  Roll Eyes buried 6 Apr 1837 in Boldre, aged 47?  Closest I can find in age and location.

Hi Mary, thanks for looking again, that looks like the right one.  Smiley

. . . and thanks Nell, that's certainly about the right date. Not sure about the age, I only have estimated birth dates for the Strides, but it would make her about 34 when she married . . . of course it may be wrong in the burial register . . .  Undecided

Regards,

Mike.
