1841 census MARY PALMER
« on: Saturday 03 May 08 06:37 BST (UK) »

Hi
Looking for info on a Mary Palmer who was born abt 1839. Birthplace given as Tavistock. although later family address is given as Macey St Torpoint. Father David, a Mine Manager.

Problem only David I can find at Torpoint is a seaman

Trying 1841 census if anyone can see a young Mary Palmer, with David as a father
I can see 2 possibles at Freebmd  registered Tavistock district, although may be just a little old

MARY ANN PALMER Sept 1840 Qtr
MARY PALMER June 1841 QTR

Can anyone identify these childrens parents, so at least I can eliminate them

Many thanks

Hi Althea

Can I just ask how you know that David was her father and she was born in Tavistock?  I've just been through the births for 1838 to 1840 and the only one in 1839 is at Okehampton and there are none in either Torpoint or Tavistock in that period.  Undecided

Right time for relook at sources..
On Mary's death cert in NZ
It has 42 yr in NZ (arrival about 1860 and from her marriage cert she was a servant for GLEESON family)
Born approx 1839, her age is given as 63 and born in DEVON.
Will need to hunt for the Tavistock and David..can't see that source

A family bible from ?about late 1888's has an address for Palmer, Macey St, Torpoint.
Maybe the Okehampton one is this Mary???
Will try to find where the David reference came from, because that could be obviously leading me in wrong direction

I'm wondering now whether the David Palmer 1891 census, Macey st Torpoint aged 52 is Mary's brother. He is given as being born Lifton Devon...so this may be a lead to look for this David and see who his parents are???

I've found the 1841 census

H0107 233 12 7 10
Stowford, Devon
James Palmer, 45, (very faint and difficult to read but occupation looks like something Miner, it could be Manganese and neighbour has same occupation)
Sally Palmer 37
Elizabeth Palmer 18
John Palmer 13
Jane Palmer 11
Adam Palmer 8
Hannah Palmer 4
David Palmer 2
Mary Palmer 1 week

Just realised that James and Sally is the same reference as I first gave for birth of Mary born 1841.  You could order the birth certificate but not sure if that would help your quest  Undecided
