Hi Lucy,

Did you see the family are down as GORBLOW in 1891 !

I'm surprised they haven't turned up as Gorblimey  Grin

RG12/2507  Folio 97  Page 9

They have a 12 year old step daughter Mary Marney,so that should be Eliza's previous married name? Can't spend time now I'm afraid, but will look later unless Liz beats me to it  Tongue

Ahhh correction, that surname is Massey..as 2 year old Mary Ellen Massey is living with unmarried mum Eliza and grannie and grandad Massey in 1881.

RG11/3136 folio 37 page 33.

But James Gostelow(Transcribed as Gosteloa) in 1881 is 21 unmarried and with widowed mum Jane.

RG11/3136 folio 41 page 41.

Hope that helps-if you don't have access to the census images shout, and one of us will type it out for you.

Lucy,

I don't know if you've noticed but in Dec 1879 in Leicester an Eliza Massey is on the same page of marriages as a Thomas Moore.
The other two names are James Holland and Ruth Vale, whom I think I have found together in Leicester in 1881.

Cannot see Thomas and Eliza though.....so did he die..or desert her! or what.
Is this the same Eliza back with mum and dad in 1881 in Markfield?
Is that where the name Moore came from, and your gran is right in thinking one of them was married before...but it was Eliza not James?

Maybe James and Eliza never did marry-perhaps she wasn't free to do so?

Questions questions  Grin

Regards

Carol

Probably the last.  My grandomother remembered lioving with her ggrand parents between the early stages of teh war and her mum dying in 1922 and someone coming in and telling her grandma that someone had dies and so she could have him now and her grandmother saying something like who'd want him after all these years.  She assumed it was he who had the baggage but it may not have been!

Hadn't seen the wedding details will look later. I am enjoyig this.

Thanks

Better do some real work now!
