Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland ...
Ten boys and fifteen girls were taught at Ardnorcher parochial school. In the same area there were seven private pay schools, in which there were about 120 boys and 60 girls.

In Ballyloughloe parish there was a National Board maintained school attached to the chapel at Mount-Temple. Lord and Lady Castlemaine both supported schools at Baylinaine whilst a bequest of Dr Maxwell supported a school at Ballinagarbery. There were approximately 150 boys and 190 girls being taught at these schools and there were also three pay schools, in which are about 200 children were educated

The Hevey Institute in Mullingar was built in the mid 1800s at the bequest of a rich local Roman Catholic landowner / brewer named James Hevey who left his lands and a large part of his estate to fund the construction of a school to 'provide for the education of the poor children of Mullingar'

Wilson's Hospital, near Multyfarmham, was built between 1759 and 1761. It was built at the bequest of Andrew Wilson for the education of poor Protestant boys and as a hospital for aged Protestant men.
