Hi Jill,

I think you are probably right. Either they didn't get married or both their surnames have been mistranscribed in the indexes.

Thank you again for your help, it is truly appreciated.

Hi Kelly,

Not sure what other avenues you could try for the marriage, but I think you can be 99% sure that you've at least got the right father for Ellen in George - and whoever was his first wife.

Perhaps if you pursue the parents, something else might come to light to explain Ellen's missing marriage? It often happens, if you concentrate on something else for a while!  Grin

Hi Jill,

I think you are correct. I have been tracing the other Ellen Woodwards in the census records and I'm 99% sure now That my Ellen Woodward is the one with parents George and Mary ann.

I've been thinking of sending for some of Ellen Woodward's brothers and sisters marriage records to see if Ellen is a witness and her name is Dobson.

Ellen's children must have thought that John and Ellen were married because Ellen's death cert has her name as Dobson and it says Widow of John Dobson.

Thanks again for all of your help.

She could easily have gone under the name of Dobson without actually marrying - just for respectability.

Just one more outlandish idea, as she was under 21, could they have eloped to marry in Scotland - Gretna Green? Stranger things have happened!  Roll Eyes

Hi Jill,

I think they probably just didn't get married.

I have a baptism record for an Ellen Woodward, and she was baptised 1860.

So in 1881 Ellen would have been 21, so unless they got married before that I can't see that they eloped. I know from older family members that they stayed in Bulwell until they died.

I have had quite a few problems trying to find this family on BMD indexes!

I can't find any birth records for 3 of John and Ellen's children. They only had 2 of their children christened. Also it looks like one of John's sisters looked after one of Ellen's and John's children.
