Hi folks
Seems ages since I last posted anything on here but this time I'm after a little local knowledge.
My mother was born in Lincoln in 1905 at 5 Brummitts Row and whilst I have a copy of the Ordnance Survey Map I've been unable to find the location on this even with a magnifying glass.
I suspect it may have been in in the area of St Martins, can anyone offer a clue or pinpoint the address for me and what is there now?
Many thanks
Alan

Thanks Geoff
Following the route of the Census Enumerator was my next step and comparing it with my 1905 map was my next move if I drew a blank here.
Regards
Alan

Hi Alan, I maybe way off the mark, but Brummitt's row , could have been named because Mr James Brummitt, a friut and poultry man, who had a business in Bailgate, and sold his goods far and wide , I know I have seen the place in Lincoln Registers. there is also a place called Brummitts court. I will have a search about .

Hi Eilleen
Many thanks for taking an interest.
Not only did James Brummitt have a Greengrocery business at 10 Bailgate in 1905 but at No. 15 Bailgate were Misses Lucy & Charlotte Brummitt with a Toy shop.
I've attempted to 'Walk' the Enumerators journey on the map but the area around The Straight, Steep Hill, Michaelgate and St Martins Lane with St Martins Street running in the middle was a maze of Courts, Alleyways, Yards & Rows in 1905 little of which survives today.
I have a feeling it could have been somewhere between Michaelgate and the upper end of St Martins Street as Geoff has suggested.
Many thanks for looking.
Alan

Alan, in the 1897 directory for Lincoln, my great grandfather Tom Exton is listed at 29, Brummitt's Row. I knew I had been looking for the place a long time back I have not pinned it down to the very plot were the house stood, but I will I think it was just a bit higher than the picture GeoffE gave you. in the directory it say's after the householders are named for Brummitt's Row, here is Steep Hill return.
Back to my map's

I think it's that block just below the writing BM 1126

Many thanks Eilleen
I too found it in the 1897 directory and in Akrills Directory of 1857 when the house my mother was born in, No. 5, was owned by Jane Brummit and William Tuxford, 'Drapers'
I agree it would seem to be the block of 'Back to Backs' below BM1126 and above St Martins Row.
Once again Cheers.
Alan
