Symbols in Marriage Entries Explained

A. Amended Entry. The Purchased Certificate will differ slightly re clerical information
·   Deduction of a Registration District
·   Deduction of a year where a new year date confusion was detected.

B. The entry was created from information in both the Registars and District Copies because:
·   The original was damaged or illegible
·   Some of the Central Registrations are typewritten and of unknown origin.

C. An original stamped or signed correction made by the Registrar was included after the event. Such corrections will not appear on any copy of the certificate issued prior to the date of the correction. IN many cased the district copy was not amended.

D. Extractors experienced problems with handwriting and extracted details represent a "Best Guess" The D entry may mean the whole entry or only one word is difficult to read.

E. A possible clerical error appears which was not amended by the extractors such as:
·   End of the month confusion such as 31 Sep 1890
·   An indefinite date such as when the date stated in the date box differs from the certified date at the bottom of the registration. Usually the earlier date was entered.

R. The date of registration was used as the date of marriage as the date marriage was either not recorded or indecipherable

S. The certificate contains information which may not be published such as:
·   Groom or Brides father is deceased
·   The Mothers name is stated
·   The age is listed in years and months
·   A subsequent divorce is listed
·   Other unusual information is listed

V. A variation exists in the spelling or interpretation of the names:
·   A slight difference in the spelling of the given or surname between
·   The Registrar's and the Bride and Groom's version. The bride and
·   Grooms spelling is preferred where it is clearly written.
·   The Registar has recorded two versions.
·   Due to poor handwriting different interpretations of names are possible.

X. A cross reference to another name has been included because the bride or groom have an alias

« Reply #5 on: Thursday 01 March 07 01:46 GMT (UK) »

Hi Jo

I'm in Adelaide South Australia and for 12 years I have been doing free reserch for people all over the world who want information about ancetors/family who came to South Australia in the 1800's.

I do all my research in the South Australian State Library, where all the b.d.m. books and much more is on record.

I also have access to passenger lists of people who came to South Australia in the 1851-1870's.

I do not have access to libraries in other part sof Australia, but if you think your person that you are looking for, came to South Australia, the arrival dates would be a simple thing for me to look up.

The ship's passenger lists are in fact photocopies of the very original passenger lists which are written up on the ships.

I would need to know the name/s of anyone who came to South Australia, as that is the only way I can find someone on the passenger list Index.

Feel free to get back to me at
  • and I would be thrilled for the opportunity to do some research for your people.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards

    Twinkleberry (alias ) Heather
who is fed up with the heat
in Adelaide, and who is also living
in a State where the drought we are
experiencing has been going for a minimum
    of 5 years.

NEW - BDM TRANSCRIPTION SERVICE OFFERED BY SAGHS

    http://www.saghs.org.au/research.htm

     Transcription Service NEW!

The Society holds copies of South Australian District BDM records. We are not permitted to provide copies of these. At present, copies are only available from the South Australian Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages. However, we may provide a full transcription of all the information recorded on a certificate.

There is a set  fee of $11.00 per certificate (members and non-members), inclusive of GST.

        * In the event that we do not hold a Certificate, a refund will be made.
        * More than one certificate can be requested on a form, but the fee is $11 for each certificate requested. (E.g., 2 Certificates = $22)

To use this service, please complete the Transcription Request Formpdf and forward it to the Research Service. The Society will record the information it holds on the particular entry or entries and forward the results by mail.  The date range of Certificates varies for each District. Adelaide District records are as follows:

        * Births: 1856 – 1922
        * Deaths: 1856 – 1967
        * Marriages: 1868 – 1937

Other Districts may have similar dates recorded, but they will vary.

    Cheers

    ONLINE SHIPPING PASSENGER INDEX 1845-1886

Kris has kindly linked the South Australian Archives on the first post on this thread - and there is a searchable index for passengers arriving in South Australia in the above years - you can search by passenger name or ship.

This search is limited to GRG35/48/1 Official Passenger Lists of Emigrants Selected by the Colonization Commissioners 1845-1886

    http://www.archives.sa.gov.au/
    > Search Collection - top left of page
    > Searching - menu bar left of page
    > Passenger list search - menu bar left of page

Enter the word AND between the given name and surname of the passenger.

    Cheers
