Hi,

Found this birth registration on http://freebmd.rootsweb.com :

George Gunn     Sep Q   1882   Lambeth  1d  545

This might be your man.

Did this couple have any children?  If so then when was the last one born?

Could he have died in WW1?

Hello Christine
Do you have the marriage certificate? What was George's occupation and what was his father's name and occupation?  Who were the witnesses? This will help us identify George on a census and then, hopefully, lead to a birth registration.
Do you know when and where Jessie remarried?  Did George and Jessie have children - if so when was the youngest born and where?  This will help narrow down a death date and place.
This could be a child:

Births Jun 1917
Gunn  Ruth S  Greenhouse  Croydon  2a 454

Sorry Christine but I am a bit confused!
Your mother was born 1916 from the second marriage to Albert Charles Smith (presumably registered as Smith) but Ruth Gunn was born after this?
Do you have Jessie and George's marriage certificate?

Hello Christine

Much clearer now thank you  Smiley

This looks like Jessie's second marriage

June 1921
Jessie Gunn  Croydon 2a 650 Spouse Smith
Corresponding entry for Albert C Smith

The Reg District fits with the birth of Ruth.

This limits the time frame for George's death  - assuming the second marriage  was legal of course!

I have had a quick look on the Commonwealth Graves site for a death for George but did not see anything obvious - I will take another look.

I am having no luck with George's death.  I have checked the full death index from 1910 - 1920 for the quarters that have not been transcribed by Free BMD and the first 2 Quarters of 1921.

There are some George Gunn deaths but none that fit with what we know of your man.

As Nanny Jan said the likelihood is that he died in the War which would explain why his death is not in the usual regieters.

On the CWGC site there are only 2 G Gunns that I think could be yours assuming a birth date of 1882 and one Gunn - all age unknown.

Take a look at the site

http://www.cwgc.org/

and let me know what you think.

It might be worth asking on the WW1 board for a look up in Soldiers Died in the Great War in case there are details that may be of help.

Hello Christine

If you get the marriage certificate for George it should give you his age (let's hope it does not say "full age").  You can then look again at the WW1 deaths.
Let us know when you get the certificates.
