Searching for- Thomas Furmston, b 1818 ellesmere, on census records
1841 - can't find 1851, Civil Parish Middleton I have found Thomas with wife Selina, she was b in Sellatyn Unable to find Thomas on any other census, but I have Selina, on 1871 - 1881 - 1901.
Everything seems to fit for her on these census records, except the place of birth, herein lies my confusion
1871 place of birth is " Lynydrain " Reg dist " Oswestry " Widow
1881 " " " Sellatyn " 1901 " " " Lynydrain " I'm wondering if I have the right Selina each time?
I'd appreciate some feedback.
Judy

Thanks for the reply, and also for you finding Selina on 1891 census as well, I didn't have that. I will now go with her on each one, sometimes another opinion helps
Kind regards'
Judy

So that you keep to the straight and narrow - It's Selattyn - one of my main lines is from there

Hello Gadget, Now I'm a little confused! Is Sellattyn and Lynydrain one and the same place?

I've just looked at the 1871 and it says Tynydrain, Denbighshire.
Selattyn is a small border village, in Shropshire but within walking distance from the Welsh border (Denbighshire).
Tynydrain looks like a very small collection of 2 or 3 houses about 3 km to the South West of Selattyn but is in Denbighshire.
It would seem quite normal to say that you were born Selattyn if you lived that close but, as she was in Oswestry, Tynyydrain might have been known as a place locally.

This is what it says on the 1871. It's quite clear if you know the area and a bit of Welsh

PS I think Ty yn y draen is house in the thorns or Hawthorn, I think. This has been combined for ease of speaking to Tynydraen or Tynydrain

Just some visuals for you.
The first is taken from Orseddwen, a farm just to the North of Tynydrain, looking towards Shropshire and the second is of Selattyn church.
My ancestors from Orseddwen used Selattyn as their local church despite living on the Denbighshire side of the border in the parish of Llangollen. Selina's family might well have done the same. I do have records of Selattyn so, if you need them, give me a shout

I think that I've found Selina in the 1841:
Tynadrain, Upper Porkington, Selattyn
HO107/916 Book 5 Folio 4 page 1-2
Edward Morgan, 35-39, Farmer William, 25-29 Joseph, 20-24 Selina, 20-24 Elizabeth, 9 Frances Davies, 15-19, Female Servant John Davies, 16, Male Servant Robert Thomas, 12, Male Servant Evan Roberts, 20-24, Male Servant Elizabeth mason, 20-24, Female Servant
All born County
Parish is down as Llansilin - which fits - the Llangollen/Llansillin parishes meet around there.
Regards

Hello again Gadget,
Thank you so much for all the wonderful information, I have been unsuccessful with finding Selina and Thomas on the 1841 and 1861 Census, so to have you find Selina is a real bonus for me. When I see the results I get from rootschat it makes me realize just how much more I need to learn for my research. You mentioned having records of Selattyn, I haven't been able to find the marriage of Thomas & Selina about 1841/42, I'm assuming she would marry in her Parish, Your help is greatly appreciated.
Kind regards, Judy

Hello again, I somehow missed your last post to me, it wasn't until I had replied to you that I saw it. I will master the internet sooner or later!! It's all new to me. Thanks again.
